Lead Innovation and Technology Solutions Attorney - Latham & Watkins

Alistair is the Lead Innovation & Technology Solutions Attorney for Latham & Watkins’ European operations. Alistair works cross-functionally with a global team of lawyers and technologists to identify, develop and validate strategic innovation opportunities across the firm. Prior to re-joining Latham, Alistair created and led iManage RAVN’s presales operations and advised on product strategy, working with top global law firms and FTSE 100 in-house legal teams to design and implement AI powered data extraction tools for due diligence and contract reporting. Before focusing on legaltech, Alistair began his career as a banking lawyer – primarily focused on leveraged finance – working in private practice (Latham & Watkins and Ashurst) and in-house (Deutsche Bank). Alistair is also a programmer fascinated by the intersection of law and coding. As such, Alistair enjoys getting his hands dirty, coding and training different machine learning algorithms to better understand the opportunities and limitations of B2C and B2B AI solutions.

Shawn Curran, Head of Legal Technology at Travers Smith, has earned the reputation within the industry for innovative thinking. Whether it’s working with legal tech vendors to evolve their product, building internal systems that support digital transformation or leading award winning teams. He possesses a wealth of experience within the legal technology market having worked at both small and large firms, in various business and technology focussed roles.

Christopher Tart-Roberts

Head of Lawtech, Chief Knowledge & Innovation Officer - Macfarlanes

Chris is head of the lawtech group. He works with clients to develop technological solutions for legal problems, offering new and innovative ways of tackling clients’ most complex issues and enhancing and streamlining the firm’s existing services.

Chris specialises in legal services innovation, including the application of artificial intelligence and data analytics to legal practice, the automation of processes, expertise and standard documentation, legal process and project management and the application of other innovative solutions in a legal practice context.

He has a particular focus on digital products, working with clients to understand their businesses and the issues they face, and designing solutions to fulfil their specific legal needs and requirements.

Chris is a member of the Law Society’s Technology & Law Committee, the City of London’s Lawtech Sounding Board and the Harvard Law School Innovation Colloquium.

Jeff Westcott

Director, Lawyer Productivity Solutions - Clifford Chance

Jeff has a deep background in technology, starting as a programmer after a Computer Science BSc from Manchester, and working up to more recent roles involving strategy and innovation following an MBA from Cass. Over the last 20 years, Jeff has worked in numerous technology roles in Finance and Legal Services, and currently is the Director of Lawyer Productivity Solutions at Clifford Chance LLP. His current position is focussed on making sure fee-earners have the best experience with Technology and are able to deliver enhanced value to clients and the firm.

Olly Thornton

MD and Co-founder - Thirdfort

Olly Thornton-Berry is the MD and co-founder of Thirdfort. Previously, he worked in software investment before setting up Thirdfort after a friend was defrauded out of £25k on a house purchase.
Fraud is a social blight and Olly, along with long-time friend Jack Bidgood, founded Thirdfort to help fight it. Thirdfort dramatically reduces risk for lawyers during client interactions and makes life much easier for people going through Big Life Moments. Oliver Stanley

CEO Kudocs

After 5 years at Bird & Bird LLP, Oliver is now a ‘recovering’ city lawyer.

After 5 years in logistics-tech (they ‘uber-ised’ man & van waste collection), Oliver returned to his legal roots and joined Kudocs in Feb 2019. They made a viable project, a commercially live product by the end of the year. Since then, Kudocs has gone from strength to strength.

As a lawyer, Oliver hated the time and effort to complete administrative tasks. He thought that they got in the way of the value (and interest) of substantive work that lawyers like doing and clients (usually!) don’t mind paying for. Oliver believes that legal tech has to be the answer to this.

“Not just for cost & efficiency reasons, but because lawyers don’t want to be doing this kind of work. Legal tech is an enhancement to their service, not a threat.”
