PART 2: How Might Our Beliefs Impact Our Identity as Mathematics Educators?

I am a mother, wife and math teacher. I currently teach at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA and my favorite class to teach is statistics! This is my 27th year of teaching and I am a Desmos fellow and Desmos certified presenter. @mathteacher24 is my twitter handle and I blog at mathteacher24.blogspot.com. Megan Holmstrom is an independent consultant with MathSpeakGlobal, working in PreK-G12 mathematics teaching & learning, with an emphasis mathematics teaching practices that impact student learning outcomes. Megan most recently spent time at The American School of Madrid in the role of Upper School Instructional Coach and Student Academic Support, and previous to Madrid, Megan was with The American School of Dubai as the Teaching & Learning Coach. While in Dubai, Megan engaged deeply with NESA’s Collaborative Communities - participating as a founding member and facilitator of both the Coaching Collaborative and Mathematics Collaborative. Throughout her 20 year career in education, Megan spent 12 years in the classroom, before moving into curriculum & instruction and coaching. While in the States, Megan was an adjunct faculty member at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in the Center for Math & Science Teaching. As faculty, she co-taught weekly graduate courses, while working with public schools to develop teacher-leaders in elementary mathematics. Over the course of her career Megan also participated on an Instructional Materials Adoption Panel (California, 2005), as well as Teachers Mathematics Advisory Panel (California, 2009-2010). She is most excited about being a part of a community that supports teachers and students in all things mathematics teaching & learning!

Ryan is the Head of Secondary School (Grades 6-12) at Pilgrim School in Los Angeles. Ryan has worked extensively in developing a coherent K-12 mathematics program grounded in the principles of active learning and student-involved assessment. Ryan's leadership, as well as his partnerships with teachers, include a wide range of content area expertise. He has spent almost fifteen years in the classroom teaching mathematics ranging from grade six to undergraduate level calculus. Ryan taught graduate level Methods of Teaching at Loyola Marymount University, where he also served as adjunct faculty in the Center for Math and Science Teaching, working with Los Angeles-area Catholic schools in improving their instruction in math and science. He has served on the Professional Services Committee for the California Association of Independent Schools, where he helped organize professional development opportunities for teachers across Southern California. Ryan's professional workshops include the Fall and Winter Training Institutes, and the Spring Educators Conference for NESA. Further, he and Megan designed and implemented the Summer Retreat for Educators at Pilgrim School.
