This presentation is based upon a project which seeks to reconstruct historical systems of education in pre-colonial India. The presenters will speak of some of the methodological difficulties in reconstructing pre-colonial education in a post-colonial context. Participants will also be given a glimpse at what education in India looked like BEFORE the arrival of the British colonisers. To what extent does knowledge of pre-colonial education assist in developing contemporary education?

Varadarajan Narayanan is a member of the School of Education, Azim Premji University, Bangalore. He is interested in philosophy of education, history of education in India, and history of political thought.
Rabi Prakash is completing his doctoral dissertation on the emergence of political discourse in early modern vernaculars of North India, at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His broad interests include early modernity studies in India, intellectual history and history of scholarship.
