Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs, MSC Group

An experienced global maritime leader in the areas of policy, government, and related law, Bud Darr is Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs of MSC Group which operates in 155 countries.

Having served in the US Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard, as well as being an accomplished ocean yacht racer, Bud’s longstanding connection with the sea and ships is both personal and professional.

Bud began his education in Submarine Nuclear Engineering and later obtained his formal undergraduate education at the US Merchant Marine Academy, where he was trained as a Deck Officer. During his service with the US Coast Guard, he studied law at the George Washington University Law School. He most recently led the Maritime Policy efforts of the Cruise Lines International Association prior to joining the MSC Group in 2017.

Today, Bud is engaged across MSC’s Cargo and Passenger divisions, developing the company’s central Government Affairs function, based at the Group’s headquarters in Geneva. He is closely involved in MSC’s response to developments in environmental public policy and regulation and other industry-wide issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, maritime security, safety at sea, and international shipping policy. He serves on the Boards for the UK Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, International Chamber of Shipping, Liberian Shipowners’ Council, and Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel.

Currently heading up the team that is responsible for identifying, exploring and evaluating carbon neutral fuels relevant for Maersk’s fleet of appr. 750 vessels. The aim being to convert the entire fleet to a fully carbon neutral fleet as soon as possible. Previously Head of Innovation at FORCE Technology with the main task of managing the R&D portfolio as well as strengthening the innovation processes. Previous experience within the area of chemical risk assessments and life cycle analysis.

Dr Elizabeth Lindstad is Chief Scientist in SINTEF Ocean, Norway. She holds a MSc in Industrial Economics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology and a PhD in Naval Architecture from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. She has long experience in developing and managing research and development projects with focus on sustainable shipping solutions, new innovative vessel designs and supply chains. She has been co-author, of EU & IMO policy studies. Member of ESSF the European Sustainable Shipping Forum, consisting of representatives from the European shipping sector and national representatives since it was established in 2013.

Samy Djavidnia

Environment & Sustainability Senior Project Officer, EMSA

Samy Djavidnia is a Senior Project Officer at the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), which he joined in 2007. Samy’s expertise includes environmental monitoring, earth observation, international collaboration and science diplomacy. Prior to joining EMSA, he worked for the European Space Agency in Germany and Spain, for Imperial College in the UK and for the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Italy. At EMSA Samy leads the European Maritime Transport Environmental Report Task Force and the work related to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Zero Pollution Action Plan.

Chris Chatterton

COO, Methanol Institute

Over the past 25 years, Mr. Chatterton has worked at the executive level across the energy, shipping, transportation, renewables and chemical sectors, where he has been responsible for creating strategy, fundraising, restructuring, crisis management and operations for both startups and multinationals.

Prior to joining MI as COO, Mr. Chatterton managed the energy assets for a vertically integrated, leading European family office with an annual turnover of USD 5 bln and core interests in gas, fertilizer & chemical production.

Chris has led numerous funding rounds for energy and agricultural projects with many successful exits, to include three public offerings in addition to numerous cross-border private placements and is active in the start-up space as a mentor and founder.

Mr. Chatterton is fluent in Russian and holds an EMBA from HEC Paris.

Leonidas has acquired extensive experience on the biofuels industry after his stint at Argus Media for the past 3,5 years, where he became deputy editor for the biofuels desk after covering the market for crop and waste feedstocks as a senior market reporter.

Nikos Xydas

Nikos Xydas is the Technical Director of the World LPG Association, WLPGA, in Paris and also of the European LPG Association, Liquid Gas Europe, in Brussels. He holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Glasgow and his professional background comes from international technical, operations, safety, retail, communications and strategy roles in ABB and then in Shell, mostly in the sectors of LPG, lubricants and retail. In his present role he leads the marine related activities in the LPG industry. He holds a double Greek/French nationality, living in Paris.

Frédéric Meyer

Frédéric Meyer is the Head of Strategy & Projects for TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, Total’s dedicated business in charge of worldwide bunkering activities. He oversees a team that focuses on low-carbon alternative marine fuel projects, R&D programs and industry initiatives.

With 20+ years’ experience in the energy sector, Mr. Meyer joined TotalEnergies in 1992 and has held leadership positions in the Marketing Services and Gas, Renewables & Power (GRP) branches of TotalEnergies. His previous roles included managing TotalEnergies’ Special Fluids and Additives business unit in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions, and TotalEnergies’ Commodities Trading business for Asia Pacific and Atlantic markets.

Mr. Meyer is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from the École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques. He also holds a Post-Graduate in industrial engineering from the École des Mines of Nancy, and in Industrial Marketing from the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers of Paris.

Armando Graziano

Project Officer for Research & Analytics, European Maritime Safety Agency

Armando began working at EMSA in 2017 as a Project Officer for Technical Assistance to ENP Countries, assisting the countries facing the Mediterranean Sea, following the coastline from Morocco to Lebanon. Later on, Armando joined the team dealing with Research and Analytics, and that in charge of setting up the EMSA Academy. Before joining EMSA, Armando has been a seafarer on board chemical tankers, he has worked in the technical department of a shipping company and later-on he joined the World Maritime University of the IMO as a technical officer dealing with ship inspections and maritime administrations. Armando’s background is quite varied as it encompass operational and academic know-how. He holds a Ph.D. in Maritime Affairs; his work focused on the Implementation of EU legislation with regard to Port State Control and Flag State matters.

Alexandros Charalambides

Associate Professor, Cyprus University of Technology

Dr Alexandros Charalambides is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Cyprus University of Technology and used to serve on the Board of Directors of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES). He has always been in favour of promoting entrepreneurship and bringing research and innovation to industry, and since 2016 he is the co-ordinator of the EIT Climate-KIC Cyprus Hub, focusing on promoting climate innovation and entrepreneurship in Cyprus. More recently, he has recently set up the Maritime ClimAccelerator, with another 7 organisations from across Europe, focusing on the decarbonization needs of the maritime industry.

Mikael Lind

(Adjunct) Professor in Maritime Informatics, Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) and Chalmers University of Technology

Dr Mikael Lind is (Adjunct) Professor in Maritime Informatics at Chalmers University of Technology and Senior Strategic Research Advisor at Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE). He has initiated and headed a substantial part of several open innovation initiatives related to ICT for sustainable transports of people and goods. In his capacity of the world's first professor in Maritime Informatics he also part time at the Chalmers University of technology (M2), Sweden, exploring the opportunity of maritime informatics as an applied research field. Lind serves as an expert for World Economic Forum, Europe’s Digital Transport Logistic Forum (DTLF), and UN/CEFACT. He has been the lead author of many concept notes associated to maritime and transport informatics brought up by international trade press and has become recognized thought leader in Maritime Informatics. Lind has also served as mini-track chair for Maritime Informatics at the major regional IS conferences in Europe and the Americas for several years.

Reinoud Pijpers

Director, ISRA

Reinoud Pijpers (1952) studied Public Administration at the University of Amsterdam. Reinoud has been active participating in various international gremia during his professional career working for the Netherlands government.
He was active in preparing and attending several meetings for the ministers in the EU in Brussels, intensive contacts with members of the European Parliament, attending meetings in the framework of the OECD, participation in the preparation of the Hong Kong Convention in the IMO in London, and the various sessions of the Joint ILO/IMO/ Basel Convention Working Group on Ship Scrapping in Geneva/London.
During this period he got acquainted with (the predecessor of) ISRA and joined this organisation as Director in May 2018.

GATERS is a collaborative European project under the EC H2020, bringing together 18 European technology experts and prime stakeholders to explore the first “Retrofit Application” of novel propulsion and manoeuvring device for ships called “Gate Rudder System”. This system has already shown a remarkable fuel saving (max of 14% in trials and 30% in-service) as a sole energy-saving and excellent manoeuvring device as the world’s first new-build application on 402 TEU coastal container ship (Shigenobu) in Japan. However, the GATERS project aims to demonstrate the emission and economic advantages of the Gate Rudder System as a Retrofit for the first time.

This presentation presents the details of this three-year Innovation Action project, which has kicked off in February 2021 and discusses the expected impact by applying the world’s first retrofit gate rudder application on a 4749 DWT coastal general cargo vessel (M/V Erge) in Turkey.

Kerry Strøm is the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Marine Operations Coordinator for R/V Neil Armstrong, R/V Atlantis, HOV Alvin, ROV Jason and AUV Sentry.

With 24 years of maritime operations experience on & off shore in the commercial and academic maritime sector, she is keen to find synergies to merge science and industry to learn more about our oceans, to advance our understanding and ability to find solutions to our challenges through unlikely collaborations while having fun!

Alessandro Lo Piccolo

Assistant Director, Inspections & Surveys Department, Bahamas Maritime Authority

Having originally joined The Bahamas Maritime Authority in March 2017 as Technical & Compliance Officer for the Inspections & Surveys Department in London, Alessandro was promoted to Assistant Director in 2019. His role not only encompasses ensuring that The BMA fleet meets all regulatory requirements but also the development of new rules and regulations to ensure continuous safety improvements within the maritime sector. Currently involved in the ship building program which will frequently require an evaluation of an alternative design and arrangement (AD&A) study, Alessandro also specialises in review prototype testing for novel technology.

In addition to his work in the Inspections and Surveys Department, Alessandro supports The BMA’s Maritime Affairs department at the IMO and is an examiner for new Marine Officers in The Bahamas.

As a former employee of a leading IACS classification Society responsible for the Southwest of England, he was the key point of contact with clients for survey and type approval. He also brings decades of operational knowledge from his time on board large passenger ships where he led and coordinated engineering operation teams. He is a highly qualified Chief Marine Engineer, ISM/ISPS/ISO/MED Lead Auditor and MLC Inspector. His experience covers many aspects of the industry including new Ship Building, Dry-Docking planning, Commissioning Engineering, Damage Assessments, Equipment Certifications and Risk Analysis.

Wim Stubbe

Advisor SME Ports, Aartlink and founder of the EN-GAGE platform

Born in Brugge (Belgium), Wim Stubbe has a master’s degree in Law at the University of Leuven, and a postgraduate degree in Media-management.

Overall, Wim Stubbe has mainly been working in the development and management of European cooperation projects and networks in the economic, maritime and energy spheres. One of the most recent results is the creation of the OWPP (Offshore Wind Ports Platform) within the scope of Windeurope, bringing 20 small and large ports together in order to prepare them for the challenges of the offshore wind industry.

During the last 13 years, Wim has been working at the Belgian port of Oostende, focusing on the traditional logistic port operations (o.a. cruises), the development of offshore renewable energy (o.a. wind, wave, solar) and the EU project development and implementation. Within the actual maritime world, the activity profile of ports is permanently changing and port cooperation is a necessity in order to catch up with the fast global changes. Therefore, most of the EU projects were related to low carbon port management, hybrid shipping (including the use of hydrogen) , the implementation of IT and IOT as tools to improve port operations, offshore renewable energies and circular economy.

Turi Fiorito

Director, EFIP

Turi Fiorito is the Director of the European Federation of Inland Ports. He has over 5 years of expertise in EU transport policy. He was the former Transport Policy Advisor to Member of the European Parliament Wim van de Camp, working on legislation such as the Mobility Package, Port Services Regulation and the Fourth Railway Package.
This gave Mr Fiorito an expertise on EU legislative processes, policy making and institutional practices. He combines this with his knowledge of the entire transport and logistics sector.
Before his Brussels career, Mr. Fiorito worked for the Dutch Embassy in New Delhi. He graduated Cum Laude from Utrecht University as a Master in International Relations.

Juan M. Díez

Strategic Planning & Innovation Director Port Authority of Valencia

Juan Manuel Díez holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering and a MSc in Port Management and Intermodal Transport. He also holds a Diploma in Digital Business and Advanced Studies in Sustainability, Development and International Cooperation.

Currently Strategic Planning & Innovation Director in the Port Authority of Valencia, Mr. Diez accumulates more than twenty years of experience in the field of ports and maritime transport, participating in several projects related to innovation and port management, including port efficiency, new technologies implementation, environmental protection, safety and security, risk assessment and innovation. Mr. Díez has participated as speaker in several national and international Congresses, Seminars and Workshops in Europe and Worldwide. Author of different monographies and articles concerning port management, he is instructor of the UNCTAD Port Certificate Program in the English, Spanish and French Networks, an expert to the EU TAIEX Program in the field of Transport, and a lecturer in different Spanish Universities.

Mr. Díez participate actively in different industry committees, including the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) and the Mediterranean Ports Association (MEDPORTS), among other.
