Neil Ward-Dutton is vice president, Automation, Analytics and AI at IDC Europe. In this role he guides IDC’s research agendas, and helps enterprise and technology vendor clients alike make sense of the opportunities and challenges across these very fast-moving and complicated technology markets. In a 28-year career as a technology industry analyst, Neil has researched a wide range of enterprise software technologies, authored hundreds of reports and regularly appeared on TV and in print media.

Neil initially studied and trained as a software engineer, and holds a BSc in Computer Software Technology from the University of Bath. He is also a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce).

A self-taught developer, James has architected over a dozen 0-to-1 production applications and brings deep expertise in Data Fabric, Cloud Architecture, User Experience Design, and Agentic AI. With a strong belief in learning by building, James has led numerous hands-on workshops that teach modern application development from the ground up to participants of all skill levels.

James has held roles across Product Management, Software Engineering, Enterprise Support, and Community Programs—each shaping the way developers experience and succeed with Appian. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
