Global Mathematics: An Elective Mathematics Class for ALL Students

About This Webinar

This session will describe how one school created an elective course, Global Mathematics, that helps students understand and critique the world while also experiencing wonder, joy, and beauty. This course engages students at every ability level through the study of the history of mathematics and the usefulness of mathematics to address global, regional, and local issues.

Dave Ebert

Dave Ebert teaches kids how to do, appreciate, understand, and love mathematics at Oregon High School in southern Wisconsin. He has been teaching students in grades 6-12 for over 20 years. He recently served on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is a Past President of the Wisconsin Mathematics Council, and has held multiple leadership roles in both organizations. He has presented and led workshops for teachers on a variety of topics at the local, state, and national level. He is a past recipient of a Kohl Fellowship, the Marquette University School of Education Young Alumnus of the Year Award, a Best Buy Teach award, and the Miriam Connellan Mathematics Education Award. He was recently honored as the Wisconsin Mathematics Council Distinguished Mathematics Educator.

The Global Math Department began as a group of teachers who knew each other through Twitter, math education blogs and Twitter Math Camp. Since 2012 The Global Math Department community has grown into a multi-faceted group of math educators who love to share their ideas related to teaching and learning mathematics.
