Fragility fracture care remains a very significant and ever increasing public health challenge worldwide. Fragility fractures are devastating to individual patients and their families largely due to their consequent increased disability, morbidity and mortality. Furthermore they are expensive for the wider health and social care services, given the ageing demography worldwide; they are predicted to become an even greater issue in the years ahead.
The role of the ortho-geriatrician is well established and evidence based in the UK but this is not the case in many other countries. Ortho-geriatric input consistently results in better outcomes for fragility fracture patients and should be embedded within routine care for this complex patient group. Using case studies this presentation will highlight important aspects of fragility fracture care in older patients.
