CRIN Water: Building Connections within the Water Innovation Ecosystem

The water innovation ecosystem is a big and busy space, with participation from entrepreneurs, municipalities, governments, NGOs, academia, and industries including energy, agriculture, mining, and more. The CRIN Water Technology Development Theme is engaging a diverse, multi-sector network to create connections within the ecosystem and to encourage collaboration to solve our shared water challenges.

The goal of this webinar is to help make connections within the water innovation ecosystem by featuring three water technology research facilities which represent a broad range of industries and technology readiness levels. First, the Water Technology Development Centre (WTDC) is a dedicated facility for testing water treatment technologies used in the in situ oilsands industry, operated through a partnership of oil and gas producers. Next, ACWA (Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets) is a partnership between the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary to provide a facility to test wastewater treatment technologies for addressing environmental and human health challenges. Finally, InnoTech Alberta provides a dedicated research team and testing facilities for technology development in both the private and public sector.

Tom Reinders is a Technology Development Engineer with Canadian Natural. Tom’s role at Canadian Natural is to de-risk technologies for their in-situ oil sands assets. He participates in the Water Technology Development Centre (WTDC) as a pilot lead and as Canadian Natural’s representative on the Management Committee. Tom has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta and a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

Project Engineer, Technology & Innovation – Canadian Natural Resources Limited

Chemical Engineer and Project Manager with 15 years in the Oil & Gas Industry. Adele has worked in feasibility, design and optimization of upstream and downstream oil & gas facilities, with a special focus on water treatment systems. Having worked both on the EPC side as well as for an owner-operator, her passion for working with others and accelerating technology adoption has led her into project engineering in the Technology & Innovation space at Canadian Natural. Connecting and collaborating with experts internally and outside the company, through groups like CRIN, COSIA, PTAC and universities is what she enjoys the most! When she is not working, you can find Adele running on a trails, riding her bike around the city or most likely enjoying some sushi!

Kevin Frankowski

Executive Director, ACWA (Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets) - University of Calgary

Kevin is a business leader and technology development specialist who leverages innovation and strategic vision to unlock growth. He has led a large consultancy business unit, has co-founded five startups and has led a technology accelerator and a technology test bed. His track record blends entrepreneurial and large corporate settings. Kevin focuses on trustful collaboration and building teams that nimbly deliver outcomes aligned with a growth vision.

Kevin has a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Ecology from the University of Calgary and a Masters of Applied Science in Environmental (Civil) Engineering, specializing in wastewater treatment, from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. John Gibson

Technical Lead, Water and Environmental Impacts, InnoTech Alberta

Dr. Gibson is Technical Lead, Water and Environmental Impacts, InnoTech Alberta, and is a University of Victoria Research Professor. He is a specialist in isotope tracer techniques with extensive experience in regional, national and international water projects. Dr. Gibson is Past President of the International Commission on Tracers of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, is founding member of the Canadian Geophysical Union – Committee on Isotopic Tracers, and has been employed to coordinate research programs on behalf of Environment Canada, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization. He has led or is co-investigator in numerous industry and government-funded environmental studies in the oil sands region including geochemical and isotopic investigations of surface/groundwater interaction at mining and SAGD sites, labelling and tracing of process-affected waters versus natural waters, water balance of lakes and wetlands, streamflow partitioning, sulfur and nitrogen cycling, and critical loads assessment. His broader interests include isotope mass balance of lakes, watershed source partitioning, and the continental-scale water balance.
