ClientEarth Summit - Day 1, The role of the law in the fight for our planet
Session 4: The power of law
9 November at 2:30pm GMT | 3:30pm CET | 9:30am EST - Duration 1 hour
In the face of the environmental crisis, the global legal community is uniting to accelerate action for the planet. How are lawyers around the world pioneering the use of the law for people, nature and the climate?
As the climate and environmental crises intensify, lawyers from different fields and backgrounds are turning their skills toward safeguarding the natural world. The environmental legal community is becoming more creative, innovative and sophisticated over time, demonstrating how a labyrinth of legal frameworks including human rights law, constitutional law, state aid, tort law, corporate law, and environmental law can all be wielded towards achieving the same goal of safeguarding a healthy, liveable planet.
With an onslaught of cases being brought across six continents, it has been a spectacular year for lawyers and civil society taking legal action for climate and nature. Our speakers bring stories from the front line of some of these legal wins to shed light on the recent successes, and look towards how the future cases can build on this action to accelerate lasting change for the planet.
