Dr Hiroyuki Umeki is an executive director of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO) which is the implementer of geological disposal programme and responsible for overview of all technical activities on geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) and long-lived intermediate level waste (termed TRU waste in Japan). He has particular roles in supporting repository design and safety assessment, in addition to guiding a project covering evolution of knowledge management for the geological disposal programme.
During his over 30 years work in radioactive waste management, he was strongly involved in projects involving post-closure performance/safety assessment as part of a feasibility study of geological disposal of HLW in Japan. He took the lead to provide the first “safety case” (NUMO Safety Case) by the NUMO which was published in 2021. Dr Umeki has been intensively involved in international groups, associated with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OECD/Nuclear Energy Agency.
