ICUC Book Club: The Hate U Give

Please join us for our first ICUC Book Club discussion on 'The Hate U Give'.

The Hate U Give is an in-depth look at two different communities through Starr Carter. One being the low-income, mostly black neighborhood where she lives. The other her affluent, predominately white school. Her worlds collide exactly how she didn't want them to when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her friend.

Starr's experience is a deep dive look at what being a good friend means, how codeswitching is a vital tool for many minorities, a strong community coming together, how the media handles police violence and black victims, the weaponizing of stereotypes, and the complexity of gang culture.
