Dr Alarcos Cieza oversees the World Health Organization’s work on vision, hearing, disability and rehabilitation in her position of Unit Head, Sensory Functions, Disability and Rehabilitation.
Prior to joining WHO in September 2014, she served as Chair and Professor of Medical Psychology at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. After obtaining her MSc in psychology in Madrid, Spain, she conducted a Master in Public Health and obtained a PhD in Medical Psychology from the Ludwig-Maximillians University in Munich, Germany.
She led the research unit for over ten years at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and then at the Pettenkofer School of Public Health at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany.

Carlotte Kiekens is a Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) physician and director of the Spinal Unit at Montecatone Rehabilitation Institute in Italy since January 2020. Before, she was head of clinic in the department of PRM at the University Hospitals Leuven (UZ Leuven) in Belgium.
In 2016 she co-founded Cochrane Rehabilitation and is currently Co-Director.
She is the chair of the ISPRM-WHO Liaison Committee and is involved in the development of an International Classification of Service Organizations in Rehabilitation (ICSO-R).She is a Senior Fellow of the European Board of PRM. She was general secretary of ESPRM between 2015 and 2018 and is the chair of the Professional Practice Committee at the UEMS PRM Section. Since 2014 she is a member of the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine.
She published over 100 papers and 20 book chapters.

Dr De Groote has a specialty in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, and has been the head of the inpatient Rehabilitation Department for 10 years in AZ Rivierenland, Belgium. He has a postgraduate in ‘Development Cooperation’ and ‘Rehabilitation Management in the Global South’. He has been working as a consultant for the development of rehabilitation guidelines at the Ministery of Health in Vietnam, and for the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. He has been a member of the CBR task force at the International Disability and Development Consortium and the chair of the ISPRM ‘Capacity building in low resource countries’ Working Group for several years. He has experience in the strategic planning and monitoring of rehabilitation service implementation, and has been involved in numerous trainings for rehabilitation professionals around the globe.
