There is a widespread misconception that males – children and adults – are rarely victimized sexually. This misconception is fostered by society’s deeply-held beliefs about men, masculinity and sexuality, as well as by male victims’ profound reluctance to disclose their victimization. Yet research over the past 20 years indicates that the rate of sexual victimization of males is far higher than society recognizes. Sexually victimized men comprise one of the most unrecognized and under-served traumatized populations who suffer the full array of trauma symptoms but who rarely receive any help in coping with them. This presentation will provide a summary of the current research on male sexual victimization and will then focus on the psychological, behavioral and psychiatric consequences that its victims must often struggle with.

David Lisak, Ph.D.
Dr. David Lisak is a researcher and forensic consultant who for 30+ years has studied the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence. His work has focused on the long term effects of sexual abuse in men, the relationship between child abuse and violence, and the motives and characteristics of rapists. Dr. Lisak received his Ph.D. from Duke University and for 23 years served on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he taught and conducted and supervised research. His research has been published in leading scientific journals, and he was the founding editor of the journal, Psychology of Men and Masculinity. Dr. Lisak now serves as a consultant to judicial, prosecutor and law enforcement education programs across the country. He has conducted workshops in all fifty states. He consults widely with universities, the four services of the U.S. Military, the Department of Defense, and other institutions regarding sexual assault prevention and policies, and frequently serves as an expert witness in homicide and sexual assault cases. Dr. Lisak is a founding member of 1in6, a non-profit agency that serves men who were sexually abused as children. Himself a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Dr. Lisak founded the Bristlecone Project (www.bristleconeproject.org) and directed the documentary, The Bristlecone Project: Men Overcoming Sexual Abuse.
