About the Speakers

Ursula Hofer joined The Lancet Infectious Diseases as Editor-in-Chief in 2022 after working for almost 10 years at Springer Nature, including as Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Microbiology, part of the launch team of Nature Reviews Disease Primers, and Senior Editor at Nature, handling COVID-19 papers. Ursula received a medical degree from the University of Bern (Switzerland) and a PhD in Infection Biology from the University of Zurich (Switzerland). Before becoming an editor, she practised internal medicine and clinical immunology in several Swiss hospitals and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California (USA). Ursula is keen to focus more on the increasing challenges infectious diseases pose due to emerging and re-emerging pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, and the impacts of societal and economic inequalities in a changing world.

Editor-in-Chief, The Lancet HIV, UK

Peter Hayward was Deputy Editor of The Lancet Infectious Diseases from 2010 and helped to introduce original research and fast-track peer review to the journal. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet HIV.

Shalini Garg completed her doctoral fellowship from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (India). She has a Master of Public Health from Mahatma Gandhi University (India). Before joining The Lancet Group as the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, Shalini worked in academia and publishing for two years.

Editor-in-Chief, The Lancet Regional Health — Europe, Germany

Pooja Jha is the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Regional Health – Europe since its launch in October, 2020. Prior to joining The Lancet Group, Pooja worked at Nature Research in Berlin as an editor of Nature Metabolism and contributed to the launch of the journal in 2018. She has a BSc degree in Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and a MSc degree in Medical Molecular Biology and Human Genetics from universities in India. Pooja obtained her PhD in Molecular Medicine at the Medical University of Graz (Austria) where she investigated the role of adipose tissue and liver cross-talk in NAFLD progression. This was followed by her postdoctoral research in computational genetics, mitochondrial supercomplexes, and metabolic diseases at EPFL (Switzerland). Pooja has published 20 primary research articles as a lead and contributing author. She is co-Chair of the Group for Racial Equity (GRacE), which advocates for the opportunities and resources needed to achieve racial and ethnic equity within and outside The Lancet Group.

Executive Editor and Infectious Diseases Ambassador, The Lancet, UK

Sean Cleghorn studied Zoology at Durham University (UK) before starting work as a medical editor. He was an Assistant Editor at The Lancet, then a Senior Editor at The Lancet Infectious Diseases. Sean moved back to The Lancet in 2019, where he oversees the World Report section and handles original research.

Fi Macnab is Publishing Director at The Lancet Group in London, UK. With over two decades of experience in publishing, she began her career at Harcourt in 1999 and joined Elsevier in 2001 after its acquisition of Harcourt. Fi has held key roles in pharma sales and journal management, overseeing a diverse range of health and medical journals. Notably, she spent ten years managing the Infectious Disease journals portfolio of Society and proprietary titles.
