The Relationship between Gut Micro-organisms and ADHD

ADHD is a complex disease contributed by both genetic and environmental factors. Emerging evidence has shown that some ADHD patients have an imbalance in the micro-organism communities in their gut. In this talk, Professor Stephen Tsui will unveil the mystery behind the gut-brain axis and discuss the potential influence of gut micro-organisms on ADHD phenotypes. Finally, the modulation of the imbalance in gut micro-organisms using probiotics in ADHD patients will be reviewed. The goal of this webinar is to provide useful hints for the proper use of probiotics in ADHD patients.

Tsui Kwok-Wing, Stephen is currently a professor and the Associate Director (Research) in the School of Biomedical Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In 1995, he received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry at CUHK. He was then appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry in 1997 and promoted to the full professorship in 2004. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, his team was one of the earliest teams that cracked the complete genome of the SARS-coronavirus.

Prof. Tsui has published more than 240 scientific papers in international journals, including Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, PNAS, Circulation, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Genome Biology. Besides infectious diseases, his research interests also cover the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental diseases and the relationship between gut microbiome and human diseases. In 2019, he got the Excellent Research Award from Food and Health Bureau on his genetic research about developmental delay and learning disabilities.
