Problematic internet use (PIU) is part of a wider spectrum of behaviours known as behavioural addictions which has courted a lot of controversy. Internet use has increased exponentially over the last decade and now plays an important role in the lives of billions of people. However, there are concerns about the potential harms of over-using the internet. Prevalence estimates of PIU range between 1-10%, although some estimates have exceeded 25%. Some researchers have argued that PIU is a form of addiction as the symptoms are very similar to substance-use disorder. This presentation will examine PIU, psychopathology, and potential ways to deal with the negative consequences of over-use.
