This panel session will share examples of local advocates and government programs working on community-informed preservation projects. Presented work will include National Register nominations, resource surveys, grant funded projects, community outreach, and site recognition and local designation processes. Communities highlighted will include historically excluded rural communities, those impacted by transportation and development projects, and communities dealing with the impact of past inequitable policy decisions. Attendees will gain a heightened awareness of the importance of community engagement and developing preservation goals in response to community needs, as well as learn how to leverage the story of place and community voice.
