Leveraging the Voice of the Community Through Preservation

About This Webinar

This panel session will share examples of local advocates and government programs working on community-informed preservation projects. Presented work will include National Register nominations, resource surveys, grant funded projects, community outreach, and site recognition and local designation processes. Communities highlighted will include historically excluded rural communities, those impacted by transportation and development projects, and communities dealing with the impact of past inequitable policy decisions. Attendees will gain a heightened awareness of the importance of community engagement and developing preservation goals in response to community needs, as well as learn how to leverage the story of place and community voice.

Ms. McDonald completed her Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies with the University of Central Florida and Juris Doctorate with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. She is a 2022-23 National Trust Diversity Scholar, National Geographic Certified Informal Educator and member of the NAPC and ASPA. In her tenure with the National Register listed, Deering Estate, her role encompassed archive and collections management, museum curation and interpretation, print, multimedia, and broadcast presentation. Her ongoing work in historic preservation continues to advance documentation of locally and nationally significant historic heritage resources that illustrate community diversity and recognize the intrinsic impact of underrepresented groups.

CEO and Owner of The Steele Organization, LLC and Founder of Young Performing Artists, Inc. A former NYC Corporate Manager: she handled a $10 million department before the age of 30. Awards received: Robert W. Saunders’ Library’s Lamp of Knowledge Award, Daughters of the Union 1861-1865 Civil War Remembrance Award, Sumter County Community Hero Award, FAAE Statewide Business Leader award, and DAR National Historic Preservation Award for her work of preserving Royal’s history, one of Florida’s Oldest African American Communities. Steele is an author, a direct descendant of one of Royal’s Founding families, and a FAMU Graduate.

Dr. Alisha R. Winn is an applied cultural anthropologist. She is the owner of Consider the Culture, a community engagement and cultural education firm. She has consulted and directed numerous community and preservation projects: the Osborne School, Palm Beach County Virtual African American and Palm Beach County African Diaspora Historical and Cultural Society, Inc. Oral History Projects, the Historical Plaque Project, and the Storm of '28 Memorial Park Coalition, Inc. She is a consultant for the City of West Palm Beach's Community Redevelopment Agency in the Historic Northwest District and an adjunct professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Intercultural Studies.

Adrienne Burke, AICP, Esq. is Principal, Community Planning Collaborative. Prior experience includes Principal Planner, Miami-Date County, Assistant Director and Director, Nassau County Planning, and Executive Director, Riverside Avondale Preservation, Jacksonville, Florida. She holds a M.S. degree in Historic Preservation and Urban Planning as well as a J.D. from the University of Florida where she currently serves as an Advisory Council Member, UF Urban and Regional Planning. She has been a NAPC CAMP trainer since 2016.
