One of the main roles of local preservation commissions is to locally designate historic places and districts. Part II of “The ABC’s of Historic Designation” will focus on local historic designations including: what to designate and how, using examples of successful programs; considering untold and under-represented local history and cultural significance; expanding designation criteria to fully encompass local priorities; basic research techniques and resources, and using outreach and education to identify potential resources as well as empower locals to document and designate historic places.
