Picturing Russian Empire offers a visual survey of the lands and peoples of the Russian empire through more than a millennium of history. The author team takes a new approach to understanding Russia and empire by centering images in their analysis and asking if and how images have agency in creating, confronting, and shaping imperial experience. Reaching from before Russia was constituted as an imperial power (or even as Russia) to today and exploring regions that have moved in and out of Russian control, the volume offers new ways to think about imperial dynamics and the people who live within them.
