We are excited to announce our next faculty interview with Dr. Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, the former VP of Research and Academic Affairs and Director of Continuing Medical Education at Larkin Hospital in Miami, FL. He will share his experience teaching medical research and overseeing scholarly activities for over 600 residents in 41 ACGME accredited programs.

Dr. Sanchez-Gonzalez has over 15 years of teaching and research experience in academic institutions at all levels of medical education, pre med, undergraduate, graduate and residency. He has also conducted research, in both Universities and Hospital settings, from basic to clinical, among others. Also, he has trained Postdoctoral Fellows and graduate students in their research projects, theses, and dissertations. Throughout his career, he has published over 200 research publications.

During our discussion, Dr. Sanchez-Gonzalez will be presenting his personal journey as an IMG to ultimately become a physician scientist. He will also discuss the importance of medical research as well as best practices to matching into residency. At the conclusion of our interview, we will open the discussion for questions.

Dr. Sanchez-Gonzalez has over 15 years of teaching and research experience in academic institutions at different levels, including pre-medical, graduate, medical, and postgraduate medical education. This has allowed him to obtain an insightful understanding of healthcare and medical education throughout the training continuum. He has also conducted research, in both Universities and Hospital settings, from basic to clinical, among others. Also, he has trained Postdoctoral Fellows and graduate students in their research projects, theses, and dissertations.
As an Investigator, Dr. Sanchez-Gonzalez is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Minority Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE- CGE) and grant reviewer. His research interest is to develop comprehensive interventions based on the integration of pharmacotherapy, intended to ameliorate cardiovascular functioning and improve the quality of life of patients living with cardiorespiratory conditions, including asthma and allergies.

My research line is focused on Heart brain axis in mental illnesses, specifically Schizophrenia. I conducted studies in Psychiatry inpatient and partial hospitalization settings. I successfully published peer reviewed papers as a first author. My roles included experimental design, writing manuscripts and data analysis. I presented both posters and oral presentation of one of my studies in American psychosomatic society 74th annual meeting, and at American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting, San Diego. My current research projects revolve around cardioautonomic dysregulation in Schizophrenia. I was trained on performing Heart rate variability measurements and analysis, Pulse wave analysis, and basics of statistical analysis. Trained on writing research proposal specific aims, interviewing research subjects, affectivity scales, and performing cognitive tests. Through my fellowship, I created a series of educational videos to illustrate the research methodologies.
