Power system studies generally focus on power distribution equipment and often do not consider individual building loads. As electrical vehicle (EV) charging becomes more common, a Short Circuit, Coordination and Arc Flash Analysis may need to consider EV equipment in order to evaluate short circuit ratings of equipment, size new and existing circuit breaker protection, and quantify electrical and arc flash hazards. The following topics will be discussed in this presentation, including an overview of the type of analysis and how it applies to EV infrastructure:
• Short Circuit Analysis: Review calculation of fault currents at EV equipment and discuss typical EV charger ratings.
• Protective Device Coordination: Review selection of circuit breakers and fuses at upstream distribution equipment, and how to coordinate existing circuit protection with EV charging devices to ensure proper operation during a fault condition.
• Arc Flash Analysis: Review the safety hazards associated with energized work at EV equipment and calculation of arc flash incident energy exposure at EV charging points.
• Load Flow: Considerations for upstream transformer and equipment sizing based on quantity and size of EV equipment.
