Global urbanization, combined with evidence of increased prevalence of mental illness in urban environments, highlights a need to investigate potential connections between the built environment and mental health. In fact, one in five Americans have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder in the past year, and, in the United States, the number of suicide deaths are similar to the numbers of deaths due to breast cancer. This webinar will investigate research into the built environmental and impacts to mental health though its effects on connection to nature, personal control, indoor air quality, indoor microbiome, and lighting. It will also discuss our teams work on establishing a comprehensive survey for the built environment occupants that correlates to mental health outcomes, at least in a subset of United States Veterans. Overall, this webinar will highlight the importance of current lessons learned in the field and how practicing architects and engineers can alter the built environment to benefit the mental health of occupants.
