Jo Nelson is a Senior Attorney with Atlanta Legal Aid Society and manages the Cobb County Temporary Protective Order Project. The TPO Project refers low income survivors of intimate partner violence, stalking and elder abuse to pro bono attorneys for representation at their TPO hearings. As TPO Project Manager, Jo regularly represents survivors in court and advises them about the TPO process. Before taking over the TPO Project, she worked as a general staff attorney representing survivors of domestic violence in divorce, custody and eviction proceedings. Prior to joining Cobb Legal Aid in 2016, Jo Nelson worked as a VAWA prosecutor in Northwest Iowa handling misdemeanor and felony domestic violence cases. She then served as an Assistant County Attorney in central Iowa handling among other matters, juvenile delinquencies, child dependency actions, mental health commitments, and misdemeanor domestic violence cases. Jo Nelson has served as the secretary and chair of the Cobb County Domestic Violence Task Force and president of the Women of the Bar section of the Cobb County Bar Association. Jo Nelson attended Indiana University where she majored in Religious Studies and Criminal Justice and attended the University of Iowa College of Law.
