Mike Cowen
Head of Products & Innovation for UK, Ireland, Nordics & Baltics, Mastercard
Mike Cowen is Mastercard’s Head of Products & Innovation for the UK, Ireland, Nordics and Baltics. In this role he is responsible for realising the Mastercard mission to use our technology and expertise to make payments safe, simple and smart.
In previous roles Mike was recognised as one of the payments industry’s leading global experts in the field of transit fare collection. Much of this reputation was built through his long term work with Transport for London to enable travellers to tap their contactless-enabled payment cards (or mobile devices) to travel throughout London.
Mike joined MasterCard in 2000. In his time with the company he has managed the Mondex Electronic Cash product, championed chip technology in the Asia Pacific region and forged new relationships across the public transport sector. In 2005 he was the Product Manager responsible for the TaiwanMoney card – the world’s first deployment of contactless EMV technology.
Mike’s previous experience includes ten years in the electronic security industry, where he specialised in access control and identification technologies in particular advanced RFID technologies. He began his career in the industry as a systems engineer, later moving into sales & marketing and then product management.
Mike has a BSc in Computer Technology from Teesside University.
