Owner & Licenced Clinical Social Worker
Mosaic Counseling, Inc.
Debbie Liam is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and advocate with over 30 years of experience working in a variety of clinical settings. With an undergraduate in Psychology and a graduate degree in Clinical Social Work, She has spent the majority of her career in connection with women’s agencies, rape crisis centers, and domestic violence communities. Debbie has presented locally and nationally on issues related to trauma, PTSD, sexual assault and rape, domestic violence, self-care, and meditation. She works as a consultant and/or volunteer with several agencies including The Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, DeKalb Rape Crisis Center, Men Stopping Violence, The Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence and The Georgia Commission on Family Violence. She is the trauma consultant for the Georgia Domestic Violence Fatality/Near Fatality Review Project.
Having spent over 20 years in private practice, Debbie has come to learn that the therapeutic process works best as a healing space that provides both support and accountability; this helps clients to identify and increase their strengths rather than simply focusing on pathologies. Her theoretical approaches include cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, Imago, and mindfulness-based options all within a feminist/strength-based perspective. Her philosophy about the healing process helps her stay grounded in the principles of respect for diversity, inner wisdom, empowerment, mind-body connections, self-care, and the importance of humor.
Over the years, Debbie has come to believe strongly in the healing power of nature, safe spaces, and connection with self and others. She incorporates mindfulness-based options and techniques into practice through meditation, walking meditation, hiking, yoga, relaxation exercises, and emotional/energy release work. The creation of the Labyrinth has expanded this kind of work and can assist clients in their healing process. It is enabling her to expand her work and passion in honoring the Earth, facilitating/leading ceremonies, rituals, and other important rites of passage.
