It is no doubt true that the recent pandemic accelerated the digital transformation and integration of autonomous systems in the shipping industry. Every day autonomous ships are more and more preferred in the oceans. It is of course not surprising if we consider the fact that 75% of maritime accidents are caused by human errors caused by lack of attention or fatigue. Autonomous maritime technologies offer companies a significant savings opportunity with the possibility of reducing or even completely eliminating future accidents. With autonomous or unmanned ships not only the crew expenses can be saved also the reduction of the areas reserved for the crew which enables more room for cargo capacity and new technology systems. But the benefits of autonomous systems do not mean that there are no challenges. Autonomous ships are an almost new field with ongoing research and development. While autonomous land vehicles have only recently been accepted, the adoption process will accelerate as technologies enable ships to move on their own in oceans. Overall, we will talk about commercial autonomous ship reality from today's and tomorrow's perspectives by finding answers following questions.

• Are the technological advancements sufficient for large implementations of autonomous systems?
• What are regulations for autonomous ships and how can they evolve?
• How well are we ready for cyber security resilience?

Andy is based in the UK, and has has been working in the area we now call the Internet of Things for more than 25 years. He has a BSc in Computing and Mathematics, and a PhD in Computer Science. He is a Visiting Professor at three UK Universities, and is a Fellow of the British Computer Society.

    Dr Nikolaos P. Ventikos is an Associate Professor in the Laboratory for Maritime Transport at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He is the Head of the Maritime Risk Group (MRG). Dr Ventikos’s expertise is in marine safety; risk engineering; (oil) marine pollution; risk-based design for ships and (transport) systems; human reliability (incl. human-centered design); autonomous shipping and operations; marine casualty investigation; systems engineering; resilience engineering; offshore and environmental risk; and statistical and probabilistic modeling. He has published and presented his work in journals such as Marine Pollution Bulletin, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Maritime Policy and Management, Ships and Offshore Structures, Journal of Risk Research, Reliability Engineering & System Safety etc and in more than 125 scientific conferences. Dr Ventikos was awarded the G.P. Livanos Grand Prize on Environmental Issues sponsored by the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (2000). Dr Ventikos is very fluent in English and French and he has basic knowledge of Arabic.

    Mads is Head of Innovation and Partnerships in DFDS with a strong focus on strategy, concept and partnership development and management of a number of innovation, automation and decarbonization projects within shipping and logistics. Mads is building partnerships, Open Innovation spaces and projects with external partners. Mads have a maritime background on container vessels and product tankers in worldwide trade. After ending his career at sea in 2005, Mads worked in the National Coordination at Danish Maritime Safety Administration (DaMSA) responsible for vessel management and Maritime Safety Information. Mads held a position as Project Manager in Danish Maritime Authority (Government), involved in a number of national and international projects dealing with safety at sea, e-navigation and digitalization, standardization and maritime technology, including EfficienSea, ACCSEAS, STM Validation Project, Nautical Information Directory (Niord), BalticWeb and ArcticWeb. In addition to strategy and project development, Mads is active in several Steering Committees and Advisory Groups and have represented Denmark in Committees, Working Groups, Expert groups and a number of other fora under IMO, IHO, IALA, Arctic Council and in various standardization groups.

He had over a decade of experience as a software distributor before he went into the shipping business five years ago. With a background as a floor manager in an IT development company and later CEO of a software development company, he knows how to make systems work. Using his background in development, he has specialized in autonomous shipping operations. He is currently leading a work package in an EU-funded research program on autonomous sustainable transport solutions. He is also a board member of a Norwegian consortium aimed to set future rules for autonomous vessels. He believes in technology and is highly engaged in using the right tech for the right job.

    Håvard Nordahl is a Senior Research Scientist working in the Energy and Transportation department at SINTEF Ocean. The department has several research groups, including the group Maritime ICT and Cybernetics, which Håvard works in. This research group is, and has been, part of several national and international research and development projects within autonomous shipping, perhaps most notably the MUNIN project, and the Horizon Europe projects AEGIS and AUTOSHIP. This has placed SINTEF Ocean in the centre of developments within maritime autonomy. Håvard’s research is within application of autonomy in shipping and the implications on cost and emissions, taxonomy and challenges related to uptake of autonomy, simulation, and modelling. In the AUTOSHIP project he is managing the work package “Business perspective, Roadmapping and international shipping scale-up requirements” which will publish a roadmap to large scale uptake of autonomy the 1st of April 2023.

He advises companies on the regulation of MASS and AUVs, and regularly writes and presents on legal issues arising from the use of marine autonomous vehicles. His practice mainly focuses on litigation arising from marine and offshore casualties, with a particular focus on salvage/wreck removal. Prior to becoming a solicitor, he served in the Royal Navy as an underwater warfare and specialist navigation officer.

After the acquisition of Transas by Wartsila in 2018 left both companies and continued his career in the Industry Association MARINET, an association of Russian technology companies, scientific centers, universities, shipping and energy companies, and government agencies working in the area of maritime high technologies.
    In 2019 he was elected as a Chairman of the Board of trustees of the Foundation for support of the projects of the National Technology Initiative.
    In 2021, as the leader of Autonomous and Remote Navigation Trial Project firstly opened wide usage of autonomous navigation of merchant ships, he was appointed as Director of a-Navigation Promotion Center MARINET RUT established in pursuance of the order of the President of Russia by Minister of Transport of Russian Federation.

He is also a member of the Maritime Risk Group research team and his research interests include risk assessment for the safety of maritime transportation, the effect of the human element on maritime safety, and the risk of pollution from ship accidents. He has worked in various EC funded research projects and he has published his work in international scientific conference proceedings and peer reviewed journals.
