Associate Professor of Special Education, Texas State University
Cathy Newman Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Special Education program at Texas State University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate coursework in the special education program with a focus on learning disabilities, including inclusive education for preservice and inservice general education teachers, and assessment, literacy, and disability characteristics. Her research interests focus on technology in teacher education and to provide access to the general curriculum for diverse learners. Dr. Thomas is a collaborator on a National Science Foundation grant that focuses on inclusive and accessible elementary computer science and computational thinking. She is project director for an Office of Special Education Programs Personnel Preparation Grant. With internal funding support from Texas State University, along with Dr. Glenna Billingsley and colleagues K. Scott Smith and Grayson Lawrence, Dr. Thomas is involved in exploring the use of VR in teacher education to prepare teachers to manage challenging student behavior using positive, proactive, evidence-based techniques.
