The Metaverse is a virtual, interactive space parallel to the real world, offer-ing an immersive experience with seamless connectivity. The combination of Metaverse and artificial intelligence provides new infinite potentials for education. The AI-enabled Metaverse has distinct characteristics such as personalized learning paths, automated content creation, and adaptive as-sessment, etc. These new features provide opportunities to achieve the goals of smart education through applications on class-based instruction, group-based learning, individual-based learning, and autonomous learning pro-cesses. However, the implementation still faces the challenges from techno-logical accessibility, data privacy problem, pedagogical integration, sus-tainability, disruption of use, and ethical considerations. While the im-provement of emerging Metaverse devices and widespread of Metaverse ap-plications bring opportunities to satisfy diverse educational needs, it is necessary to further take a holistic approach to build a complete AI-enabled educational Metaverse ecosystem, which requires multi-dimensional sup-port from the perspectives of techniques, policies, and value.
