Food waste is a systems problem, and solving it will require innovation and collaboration across the supply chain and across industry players. In this session we’ll learn from food waste experts who will highlight the key levers in the food system that can effectively reduce waste. We’ll also hear how CPGs and food brands are aligning on goals to address and reduce food waste, using packaging design and innovation as a way to meet these goals.

    Jim Giles
    Senior Analyst, Food & Carbon Systems, GreenBiz Group
    Jim Giles is an analyst, journalist and entrepreneur working on climate media, events and technology.

    At GreenBiz Group he has led the launch of three new conferences: VERGE Carbon in 2019, VERGE Food in 2020 and, this year, VERGE Net Zero, a new standalone event dedicated to helping companies navigate to a net-zero future.

    As a consultant, he has helped environmental organizations create harder-hitting content, reach more people, and better understand how their content changes the hearts and minds of those who encounter it. Clients include the European Climate Foundation, Carbon Brief, the Epicenter for Climate Solutions, and Anthropocene Magazine. He has also edited for and advised numerous media companies, including Quartz, Medium, the Wellcome Trust, and Nature.

    He was previously CEO of Timeline, a San Francisco media startup, and the co-founder of Matter, a multi-award-winning investigative long-form site that launched via a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. Matter was acquired by Medium in 2013. In 2017, he was a graduate of the Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program at Columbia University.

    He began his career as a science and technology reporter. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, the Economist, The Guardian, and many other publications.

    Dr Liz Goodwin OBE
    Senior Fellow and Director, Food Loss and Waste, World Resources Institute
    Liz Goodwin is a chemist by background and started her career in the chemical industry. In 2001, she joined the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and was appointed CEO in 2007 which position she held until 2016.
    Liz joined the World Resources Institute (WRI) in 2016 as Senior Fellow and Director, Food Loss and Waste. She is a Champion of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 whose aim is to halve global food waste by 2030.
    In 2015 Liz was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
    In 2017 Liz was appointed Chair of the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) by the Mayor of London.

    Ignacio Gavilan
    Director Sustainability, The Consumer Goods Forum
    As Director, Sustainability, Ignacio leads the Consumer Goods Forum team that aims to position the consumer goods industry as a leader in protecting against climate change and reducing waste. In his role, Ignacio leads the CGF Sustainability Steering Committee & Working Groups on key issues for the industry such as Deforestation-free commodities, Food Waste, Refrigerant gases and Plastics Waste. He also engages with multiple stakeholders to drive implementation forward. Prior to his current role, Ignacio worked as Founder & Principal Consultant at Accipiter, a sustainability advisory service where he helped SMEs working in international markets to create strategic sustainability roadmaps. Past experience also includes senior roles at Anglo American p.l.c., BP Alternative Energy and McDonalds.

    Anne Greven
    Managing Director FoodBytes and Global Head of F&A Startup Innovation, Rabobank
    Anne Greven is the Global Head of Food and Agribusiness Innovation and the FoodBytes! platform at Rabobank. FoodBytes! is Rabobank’s food and agriculture innovation platform, which drives collaboration between startups, corporate leaders and investors to develop solutions to food system challenges. Under Anne’s leadership, the platform has become a key driver for many of the bank’s sustainability goals and strategies. Through the platform, Anne has prioritized developing relationships with the best and brightest startups and entrepreneurs from around the world to bring innovative and actionable ideas to major F&A companies.

    As a Rabobank veteran, Anne has spent more than 15 years in the New York office of the corporate bank leading landmark client-facing businesses. In her previously held roles as both the Head of Acquisition Finance and as Managing Director, Co-Head of Capital Markets, Anne oversaw a large portfolio of private equity clients focused on food, beverage and agriculture investments. Anne routinely uses this experience in her innovation role, priding herself on sharing this expertise with internal team members and startups within the FoodBytes! community. Having this unique and qualified perspective has allowed her to provide invaluable insight and advice to participants, coaching them to properly explain their business models with an eye towards investment and marketplace success.

    In addition to her current role, Anne also remains a senior executive member of the Rabobank North America Wholesale Leadership Team and serves on the risk team, providing continual guidance and expertise across the Rabobank network.

    Jennifer Ronk
    Sustainability Manager North America - Packaging and Specialty Plastics, Dow
    Jennifer joined Dow’s Packaging & Specialty Plastics as the Sustainability and Advocacy Manager in early 2018. In this role she collaborates with the entire value chain to promote and improve the sustainability value of plastic and packaging. Her work includes serving on committees for the American Chemistry Council’s Plastics group, the PLASTICS Industry Association, Sustainable Packaging Coalition/GreenBlue, and others. She also support our supports global efforts on marine debris, including collaborating with the Ocean Conservancy and others.
    Before joining Dow, Jennifer was a Senior Research Scientist for HARC, a sustainability research hub, where she led the Environmental Science and Energy Efficiency Programs. Prior to joining HARC, she served as the Deputy Director for the Renewable Energy and International Law (REIL) Network, a DC-based international think tank for clean energy and climate change law and policy. While with REIL, Jennifer co-authored research on how international investment law affected investments in clean energy, which was published by Yale. Prior to REIL Jennifer was the Vice-President of Applied Environmental Solutions, a consulting firm focusing on addressing soil and groundwater contamination.
    Jennifer earned her Master of Environmental Management Degree from Yale University. She is also Project Management Professional certified.

    James Pronio is the Retail Systems Manager on the Food Loss and Waste Team at World Wildlife Fund (WWF), as well as Business Support Manager for the Pacific Coast Collaborative (PCC)- a regional public/private partnership focused on preventing food waste across the entire food supply chain. As Business Support Manager, he oversees the PCC’s recruitment efforts as well as ongoing business signatory engagement through working groups and technical assistance. James has 15+ years of operational experience in the grocery retail sector, working with local and global companies. James holds a BA in Business Administration from Adelphi University and currently resides in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
