Cases and Controversies: Expectations for the U.S. Supreme Court’s October Term 2021

John heads the Appellate and Supreme Court practice in Arnold & Porter's Washington, DC office. He has argued nine cases before the Supreme Court of the United States and appeared before most of the federal courts of appeals in cases across a broad cross-section of subjects. John is a Contributor to SCOTUSblog, writing the widely read Relist Watch column. He served as an Assistant to the US Solicitor General and Senior Deputy in the Office of Legal Counsel at the US Department of Justice (2005-2009) and clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy (1996-1997).

Shay heads the Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation Group in Skadden Arps' Washington, DC office. He represents clients in a wide range of appellate matters in the U.S. Supreme Court, federal courts of appeals, and state appellate courts. He has argued 13 times before the Supreme Court, most recently, and successfully, in "Merck v. Albrecht." Previously, Shay clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Anastasia leads Pacific Legal Foundation’s economic liberty practice area, where she challenges anti-competitive licensing laws and laws that restrict freedom of speech. In addition to litigating, Anastasia testifies before legislatures on the impact of occupational licensing on entrepreneurship. Her writings on all matters of law and liberty have been featured in the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, and more. With Elizabeth Slattery, Anastasia is co-host of PLF’s Supreme Court podcast, "Dissed."

Jay is Of Counsel to Kirkland & Ellis LLP and serves as Chairman of WLF’s Legal volunteer Policy Advisory Board. He served for nearly 13 years as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary at Raytheon Company. Jay has also enjoyed a distinguished career in public service as Associate Attorney General of the United States (2001-2002); United States Attorney for the District of Columbia (1988-1993); and Deputy Counsel to the President of the United States (1986-1988).
