In Military 101, only available to Edward Jones Financial Advisors, we’ll start by explaining the military structure and lifestyle. Then take an in-depth look at the military branches of service and rank.

For this 30-minute webinar, you’ll learn from Joseph “JJ” Montanaro, retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and Military Affairs Relationship Director at USAA. JJ is part of the Military Affairs Advocacy Group and has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry.

Joining JJ will be J R Lawless, Edward Jones Principal and Captain in the U.S. Air Force. J R began is carrier with Edward Jones in 2003 and now leads Region 270. Before joining Edward Jones, J R was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and a deputy program manager for the Korean F-16 Fighter Program. He is a member of Columbia Rotary South and the Mid Missouri Retired Military Officers Association and serves on the Missouri MOST 529 Board.

JJ served in the US Army for six years on active duty and was mobilized and deployed to Afghanistan. In 2009, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve.

JJ is part of USAA's Military Affairs Advocacy Group and is a Certified Financial Planner practitioner (CFP™).He is a native of Kansas City and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the United States Military Academy. JJ has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry.

Since 2005, Edward Jones principal J R Lawless has been helping individual investors in and around Columbia, Mo., identify and work toward achieving their financial goals. He also leads Region 270, fostering the health, growth and leadership development of more than 60 branch teams in central and northern Missouri.

J R began his career as an Edward Jones financial advisor in 2003 in Versailles, Mo. He relocated to Columbia two years later.

By focusing on providing client-centric, solutions-based guidance, he has built a business that ranks him among the firm’s top financial advisors and has earned him invitations to the Managing Partner’s Conference and all Financial Advisor Leaders Conferences.

Before being asked to serve as a regional leader in 2012, J R held numerous regional leadership roles, including performance leader, growth leader and secondary growth leader. He was named a principal with the firm in 2016.

A native of Marshall, Mo., J R graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and earned an MBA in finance and entrepreneurship from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis. He also holds the CFP® and AAMS® professional designations.

Before joining Edward Jones, J R was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and a deputy program manager for the Korean F-16 Fighter Program.
