How do we remember? How do we advocate? How do we survive? Please join us for a webinar with three leading voices in the November 1984 Anti-Sikh pogroms study.

Dr. Ishmeet Kaur, a professor at the University of Gujarat, will help us explore the literary and artistic response to the Pogroms. Dr. Shruti Devgan, a professor at Bowdoin College, has researched in the diasporic, 1st, and 2nd generation response to the events of 1984 and how the events have been commemorated digitally. Finally, Mr. Ryan Singh Kohli, a leading public law practitioner in the UK, will share his work with Sardar HS Phoolka in the struggle for legal justice for the victims of November 1984.

Dr Ishmeet Kaur Chaudhry (educationist, author and poet) teaches at the Centre for English Studies at Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. She was recognised as an Inspired Teacher for The President of India’s In-residence Program at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi in June 2015. She works on areas related to literature of margins, social movements and studies of violence and trauma. Her recent work has been on violence studies engaging with discourses on women and violence and 1984 anti-Sikh carnage in Delhi. Her most recent book is Black November: Writings on Anti-Sikh Massacres of 1984 and the Aftermath (Speaking Tiger; 2019)

Ryan Singh Kohli is a practising barrister in England and Wales and a leading practitioner in the fields of public law and judicial review. He has extensive human rights advocacy experience and provided litigation support to the team representing the families of 1984 victims to secure the conviction of Sajjan Kumar in the Delhi High Court in December 2018. Most recently, Ryan worked with the authorities on the Caribbean island of Montserrat to successfully emancipate a Sikh victim of modern slavery.

Santbir Singh is an avid student of Sikhi. He has spoken at retreats, conferences and youth camps for over two decades. Santbir has been trying to cultivate a deeper relationship with Sabad Guru while focusing on Sikh inspirations for social activism, feminism, and human rights through a critical analysis using different schools of thought and tradition. Born in Vancouver, he completed his bachelor's degree at McGill and currently lives in Toronto with his two wonderful children, amazing wife, and his crazy dog.

Shruti Devgan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Bowdoin College. Her research focuses on the diasporic, intergenerational and digital memories of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence. Dr. Devgan is part of the editorial team at the Sikh Research Journal run under the aegis of the Sikh Foundation. She is especially interested in bridging the gap between academia and wider audiences and has written for platforms such as Contexts (American Sociological Association’s journal for general readers) and NYU’s web journal, The Revealer.
