About Young At Art:
Young At Art is a collaboration between Astral Artists, Play On Philly and Mural Arts Philadelphia.

In this series of virtual concerts, Astral and Play On Philly have joined together to create small groups of chamber musicians of all ages and levels of experience. Each concert pairs works from the Mural Arts collection with a specific instrument group- brass, percussion, woodwinds, harp and strings.

We invite you to join us on a journey of expression and creativity through murals and music.

    Play On Philly
    The POP Harp Ensemble features 5th-12th grade students. Students in Play On Philly receive intensive music education as a vehicle for life skills and academic achievement.

    Rachel O'Brien, Harp
    Astral Artist
    A winner of the 2017 Astral Artists National Auditions and First Prize winner of the 2019 Ima Hogg Competition, Rachel O’Brien also won the 2013 Lyon & Healy Award and has received multiple prizes including the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra’s Anne Jett Rogers Award and the Saratoga Harp Colony “Play with the Pros” Competition. The 2015 Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) Presser Scholar, she has been soloist with the Houston Symphony, and has been an orchestral harpist with the Akron, Firelands, and Roanoke symphony orchestras. Rachel holds both a Bachelor and a Master’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and currently serves on the faculty of Hollins University in Virginia. Rachel has an ever-growing presence on social media, with over 50,000 followers.

    Mural by Benjamin Volta
    Starting in December 2014, students participating in our After School Education Program at The Lenfest Center in Hunting Park began exploring the generative power of art and science with artist Benjamin Volta. Inspired by the new Your Brain exhibit at The Franklin Institute and through hands-on experiments with educators from the Institute, the students developed interesting and beautiful positive patterns. The resulting mural, which includes the painting talents of Philadelphia Science Festival attendees and Dow Chemical Company employees, displays the interpretative workings of the brain as seen by the students, drawing from a trial and error exploration in pattern making and pattern recognition.

    Folding the Prism

    This bold, bright mural in the Spring Garden area north of Callowhill responds to the neighborhood’s rich history of textile production. Folding the Prism sits at the intersection of history, ecology, and contemporary painting practices. It stands out in the landscape, reminding us of the city’s history in the textile industry, and the way that visual language can evolve over time.
