Statistically, human error causes 75% of shipboard fires and explosions as well as 90% collisions at sea which leads to environmental and economical losses. So to avoid human errors and safely operate ships the owner company should ensure crew management resilience and sustainability. We decided to arrange an event which can be informative for both seafarers and owners (employers) within sharing experiences as well as solutions for challenges.     Mr. Stefan Vis has worked in developing and delivering maritime safety training for the last 15 years, having taught STCW safety training to crews from the cruise industry, shipping and offshore support vessels. Stefan has developed the combined STCW training refreshers, known as the 3-Combi, which has become the de-facto standard approach to delivering STCW refresher courses in the maritime industry in the Netherlands. Today, Stefan’s work focuses on ensuring that maritime crews have the proper competences consistently over time rather than only focusing on compliance and certifications. In RelyOn Nutec we support this by offering e-Learning, Competence management systems, innovative approaches to practical such as scenario-based custom training programs and much more.

    Dr. Stefanos Chatzinikolaou
    Manager, Global Marine Training Centre
    RINA

    Dr. Stefanos Chatzinikolaou is the manager of the Global Marine Training Centre of RINA and the head of RINA’s marine research projects in Southeast Europe. He is a graduate of the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, where he also concluded his PhD in methodologies for assessing sustainability in the maritime transport sector. His professional background includes research (ten years of experience in EU funded research projects), professional maritime training, and consulting engineering. His main fields of work and interest are ship energy efficiency, ship life cycle assessment, ship air emissions, maritime safety, and human factors. In 2020, he was elected Assistant Professor in the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, Greece.

    Dimitrios Fokas
    Training Manager
    Angelicoussis Shipping Group

    Dimitris Fokas is the Training Manager of Angelicoussis Shipping Group based in Greece. He is 61 years old, married with 2 children.
    He graduated as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer from the National Technical University of Athens in 1983. He joined in 1984 the Hellenic Ministry of Mercantile Marine as an officer of the Hellenic Coast Guard and served in various posts as Port State Control and in Merchant Ships Inspection Service. He was appointed in 2001 as the technical representative of Greece to IMO in London for 2 years. He then joined the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Brussels as senior assessor of Classification Societies for a period of 3 years until 2007. He retired as commodore as Director of Safety of Navigation in the Hellenic Coast Guard. He then worked for 2 years as Area Quality Manager of Germanischer Lloyd, when he joined in 2011 the Angelicoussis Shipping Group as Training Manager of DELPHIC, the inhouse training center of the group. He is the vice chair of INTERTANKO Human Element committee.
