Putting People First: An Introduction to Navigating Corporate Human Rights
About
Society is increasingly concerned about how business activities can impact people, communities, and the environment. Company stakeholders – ranging from employees and customers to investors and governments – expect and demand that companies integrate human rights into their business practices. In response to these calls, many companies now commit to voluntary initiatives, such as the United Nations Global Compact, and refer to human rights in their internal and external codes of conduct.
In 2011, the United Nations made an important contribution to the business and human rights debate by unanimously endorsing the “Protect, Respect and Remedy” framework outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Since the adoption of the UNGPs, there has been an increasing number of mandatory due diligence legislation proposed or adopted around the globe, most notably in Europe.
