Catalysing a Culture of Curiosity in Mathematics

About This Webinar

Doing mathematics is an amazing way to truly harness the curiosity we naturally bring to things that capture our attention. We play with ideas to explore our intuition and attempt to reason the way the world works. We create models that tell stories of patterns and relationships between what we can see and what we cannot, between what we understand and what we do not.

Teachers can be a catalyst for creating a culture of curiosity in mathematics, serving as a model for working mathematically conducive to learning experiences where students are captivated by the beauty of mathematics.

This webinar will provide participants with examples of how we might foster a classroom culture where students ask more questions than their teacher and where learning is a process of reflection, sharing the insights made and resolutions reached.

John is a high school mathematics teacher from Adelaide, South Australia. He currently works at Desmos as a Computation Layer Specialist and also runs a professional learning program in his local area. Earlier this year, John released Hook Line Sinker, a free resource eBook for mathematics teachers. He’s passionate about finding ways to harness the natural curiosity students bring to the classroom and presenting learning in enticing ways.

Global Math Department

The Global Math Department began as a group of teachers who knew each other through Twitter, math education blogs and Twitter Math Camp. Since 2012 The Global Math Department community has grown into a multi-faceted group of math educators who love to share their ideas related to teaching and learning mathematics. We recognize that as educators we are charged with promoting equity and access within mathematics instruction. In addition, we believe it is crucial that teachers be provided with quality resources and ideas that they can use immediately with their students.
