About This Webinar

Skin substitutes (SS) can be a vital adjunct to standard of care for achieving wound closure in acute and chronic wounds. However, the variety of SS categories available, and their very high unit cost, often complicated by reimbursement requirements, can make selection challenging, as the physician needs to be able to determine which SS will be both clinically effective and cost-effective for individual patient needs. In this online masterclass, a select group of KOL physicians will debate how to make good SS selection decisions, and then quiz manufacturers/suppliers as to when and why they should use their products.

The masterclass will comprise two parts. The first will be a discussion among key opinion leaders identifying the main challenges relating to the selection of a clinically effective and cost-effective skin substitute (SS) and how they deal with this in their practice. The second part will be a Q&A section, in which the KOLs will ask various manufacturers/suppliers of SSs how they can get the best use out of their product.

Dr. Thomas E. Serena MD FACS FACHM MAPWCA

Dr. Thomas E. Serena MD FACS FACHM MAPWCA, Founder and Medical Director of The SerenaGroup®, a family of wound, hyperbaric and research companies, is a board-certified Surgeon dedicated to advancing the science of wound healing.
He operates advanced wound care centers across the United Sates and globally. Dr. Serena has been the lead or Principal investigator in over 100 clinical trials including a dozen CTP trials. He is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of wound healing: He has more than 250 published papers and has given more than 2000 invited lectures throughout the world. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Wound Healing Society, the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC) and is now the immediate Past-President. He has also been President of the American Professional Wound Care Association and currently serves as Vice-President of the International Surgical Wound Complications Advisory Panel.

Prof Steven Jeffery BSc MB ChB FRCS EBOPRAS FRCS (Plast)

Steven Jeffery is a Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon. His interests are all aspects of burns, wounds and scarring. He has over 35 years of experience as a surgeon in the British Army including numerous overseas deployments. He is Professor of Wound Healing at Birmingham City University and visiting Professor at Cardiff University.

Dr. Baljit Dheansa FRCS (Plast)

Baljit Dheansa is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the world famous Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. He qualified from King’s College Hospital and completed his general surgical training in the south east before specialising in plastic surgery and burns. He has been a consultant for 17 years and has over 25 years of experience in the field. HIs main sub-specialties are burns, burns reconstruction and scar management. He has an interest in research and sits on the Scar Free Foundation Research Council as well as being a member of the British Burns Association Research Group. He is currently involved in research evaluating new dermal replacements while also using a variety in his clinical practice.

Dr. Robert Kirsner MD PhD FAAD

Dr. Kirsner is Chairman and the endowed Harvey Blank Professor in the Dr. Phillip Frost Dermatology in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is Chief of Dermatology at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics and Jackson Memorial Hospital and directs the University of Miami Hospital Wound Center. Dr. Kirsner serves on the editorial boards for a number of journals in dermatology and wound healing and serves in national leadership positions in both Wound Healing and Dermatology, including currently serving on the American Academy of Dermatology Board of Directors and the Wound Healing Society Board of Directors. In addition to career development awards, foundation, industry sponsored funding and CDC funding, he currently leads or is part of a number of NIH funded grants. Independent of books, book chapters and abstracts, he has published over 550 articles.

Dr. Paul Glat MD FACS

Dr. Glat is a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon from the Philadelphia area. Dr.Glat attended medical school at New York University (NYU) where he also completed residency training in General and Plastic Surgery. He then moved to Philadelphia for a fellowship in Craniofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Glat then joined the faculty at Drexel University College of Medicine where he is a Professor of Surgery. He is also the Chief of Plastic Surgery at St. Christopher’s Hospital where he is the Director of the Burn Unit. Dr. Glat is very active in clinical research with a special interest in Burns and Wound Care. He has published extensively on these topics and written several chapters on Wound healing and Wound care.

Dr Claudia M. Barzilay, Ph.D.

Dr. Barzilay has over 15 years of recognized research and development experience in the field of Pharma, Biotech and Medical Devices. Prior to joining Nanomedic, Claudia served in local and global companies as Project Manager, Scientific Advisory and VP R&D, gaining vast knowledge in Product Development, GLP Regulations, Patent writing and Business Development. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology, pursued postdoctoral research at Stanford University, CA- USA and achieved a Researcher and Lecturer position at the Hebrew University.

Ally-Khan Somani, BSc, MD, Ph.D., FACMS, FAAD, FASDS, FEADV is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs-Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Director of Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology in the Department of Dermatology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
