Michael joined the NCCHPP in 2007. His focus at the Centre is on two projects: public health ethics, and climate change. In public health ethics, he has worked to share ethics resources and approaches for everyday practice in public health. For climate change, he is motivated by ideas, measures and actions that may help us to flatten the emissions curve, support justice at home and globally, and avoid runaway heating and ecological collapse. His academic background is in English literature (B.A., Toronto) and Philosophy (B.A., Victoria; M.A., Dalhousie) with interests in epistemology, language and ethics. His work is also informed by past experience in community development with a not-for-profit.

Kristin brings her keen attention to detail to make meaningful improvements that connect with big-picture outcomes. In her role at the NCCMT, she manages the Health Evidence™ registry and the NCCMT’s Registry of Methods and Tools. These two repositories work to make it easier to use the best available evidence in public health practice. As a research coordinator, she also supports evaluation of the NCCMT’s activities and impacts, including documentation of the organization’s knowledge translation efforts and networking and outreach that connects public health decision makers and practitioners across Canada. In all that she does, Kristin keeps her focus on closing the gap between knowledge and application by working to bridge the worlds of academia and practice in public health.

Laurel Burton is a Healthy Settings Advisor with Northern Health’s Healthy Communities team where she supports Northeast BC communities to become healthier places to live. Previously, Laurel has supported food security work in a variety of geographical regions, and has worked with groups across the lifecycle, within BC and internationally, to support community and regional food systems development, for the aim of optimizing health. Her work is grounded in the structural determinants of health and their impact on overall well-being, both at the individual and population level. Laurel’s professional interests include healthy public policy, poverty reduction, food security, health equity, and social justice.
