Gardens Illustrated’s online masterclass series continues this year with three expert and exciting speakers, who each join us for an hour-long lecture on a topic of their choice.

This is your chance to hear from some of horticulture’s most dynamic talent and to find out about their leading approaches to planting choices, seasonality, sustainability, gardening and health, and much more.

The talks are available on-demand to be viewed up to four times as a recording; so you can make notes in your own time, go back and listen again.

The 2023 series features planting expert James Hitchmough, flower farmer Rachel Siegfried and garden designer Jo Thompson. Below you’ll find more details about each of our speakers and how to watch the masterclasses.

James Hitchmough

Author/ Professor

James Hitchmough is an Emeritus Professor of Horticultural Ecology at the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield. He is well-known for his naturalistic planting style which can be seen in prominent places like London's Olympic Park and the Botanic Garden at the University of Oxford. He has created gardens around the world applying his principles and practices of ecology to create sustainable and long-term plantings. James has published seven books and written many academic papers and articles. Along with garden designer Nigel Dunnett, he was co-author of the wildly successful book - The Dynamic Landscape: Design, Ecology and Management of Naturalistic Urban Planting.
Jo Thompson

Award-winning garden designer

Jo Thompson is an award-winning designer who has established a worldwide reputation as a trusted and sensitive garden designer and creative partner for both private and commercial clients. She has been awarded four Gold and gilts Silver Gilt medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower and won the coveted People's Choice award in 2017 at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show.

Her book The Gardeners Palette: Creating Colour Harmony in the Garden published in partnership with the RHS is an inspirational photo-rich approach to garden design, helping readers to easily find an appealing scheme, showcasing 100 evocative palettes derived from existing gardens.
