Asked whether his team had been practising drop goals if the scoreline is tight in the closing stages of the club’s first European final, Lam said: “We have been doing it every week since making the finals.”

And then for a split-second he was on the point of breaking a strict rugby taboo by revealing the code-word to be used if fly-half Callum Sheedy or a team-mate unleashes the play. “I actually called it…,” said Lam, before he caught himself. “I shouldn’t say what it is I’ve called it!”

So he didn’t – but once the chuckles had subsided, Lam explained it was a lesson from his time as head coach of Connacht, when they missed a Champions Cup quarter-final by not taking a losing bonus from a match they lost by nine points to Toulouse. “I have made sure we have done it every training day,” Lam said of the drop-goal practice, in the wake of New Zealand spurning the tactic in last week’s draw with Australia.
