Whilst this can be a difficult and bewildering process for companies across the spectrum, it’s often particularly challenging for the smaller firms and SMEs who make up more than 90 percent of the UK’s manufacturing base.
In this online panel session - the second in a series produced by the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and The Engineer - we will bring together a panel of experts from across the UK manufacturing landscape to explore some of the processes and technologies that SME manufacturers can deploy to reduce their environmental impact.

Leah Rider

SME Lead NCC (National Composites Centre)

Leah is a technical programme management specialist and was part of the team which founded NCC Connect – The National Composites Centre’s (NCC) dedicated SME support team. She was promoted to Head of SME Delivery at NCC in early 2021. Under her leadership last year, NCC Connect supported over 200 micro, small and medium businesses across 400 impactful engagements, delivering over 80 R&D projects and securing over £7.5m of funding for the SME community. Leah has recently joined the High Value Manufacturing Catapult Transformation Team as SME Lead. Working across all seven centres and their regional offices, she is inspiring a shared vision to champion collaborative working, a simplified customer journey and effective internal and external communication of offerings and services to support the UK SME manufacturing community.

Chris Wells

Director Christopher Wells and Associates

Chris has been working in the Finance and Management Accounting field for more than 35 years and is a CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Practising Certificate Holder. He is also a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
Having gained practical experience working for a number of companies, Chris set up his own business more than 30 years ago with the aim of providing management accountancy services to clients, as well as providing business consultancy services, lecturing/training and advising on business improvement and effectiveness. Whilst not a qualified engineer, Chris uses the knowledge gained as a commercial apprentice, and also when working with high precision manufacturing companies and in Research & Development, to be able to bridge the gap between finance, production and engineering when advising clients and when lecturing.

Helena Simmonds

Innovation Manager / WMG SME Group

Helena Simmonds works as an Innovation Manager with the SME team at WMG, University of Warwick. Here she collaborates with local industrial partners to grow their business through technological innovations.
Helena has a strong background in Materials and Manufacturing; she started her career at BAE Systems where she gained experience in production support and quality engineering. After joining WMG in 2013, Helena worked in the Automotive Composites Research Centre (ACRC) developing manufacturing processes and characterising materials.
Now working in the SME team, Helena is focussed on helping local manufacturing companies adopt sustainable manufacturing practices. An associate of the Institute Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), Helena is skilled in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and carbon foot printing. Whether it is materials, processes or digital tools, there is normally a way to do things in a more sustainable manner. She believes that sustainable practices should have a positive impact on both the environment and the bottom line.

Will Thomas

Senior Design process Engineer

Will is a Senior Design process Engineer at Armac Martin, an SME manufacturing luxury cabinet hardware. Will graduated from Nottingham University with an MEng in Mechanical Engineering and has been working at Armac Martin for the last two years. He is responsible for continuous improvement of processes within the factory and is a member of the sustainability team. Ensuring sustainability is a key factor in decision making is a growing part of his role as the company move to net zero.

Head of Operations at Armac Martin

Steven is Head of Operations at Armac Martin, an SME manufacturing luxury cabinet hardware. He has worked as an Operations Manager across multiple sectors for the past 12 years, building a diverse range of experience, and has worked in manufacturing for the past 8 years, developing expertise in leadership, digital innovation, process improvement and lean methodologies. Steven is part of Armac Martin’s sustainability team and has been working with the team to achieve net zero carbon emissions, as well as reducing usage of non-recyclable materials.
