ClientEarth Summit - Day 1, The role of the law in the fight for our planet
Session 2: A just transition
9 November at 11:15am GMT | 12:15pm CET | 1:15pm EET - Duration 1 hour
Moving towards a net zero economy is vital to protect lives and livelihoods of the future. But how do we ensure no-one and no region is left behind in the energy transition from coal to clean?
The transition to a net zero economy will be transformational for every aspect of society. From energy to transport, construction to agriculture, the previously dominant, polluting industries are giving way to clean technologies and activities that must operate in line with global climate and environmental commitments.
An ideal just transition would ensure multiple and reinforcing societal benefits are distributed across society, including sustainable and inclusive jobs, empowered and thriving communities, a better protected environment and improved health and wellbeing. But while many millions of new jobs will be created along the way, certain communities will be impacted harder than others, particularly for coal regions such as Poland, Greece or Romania.
To minimise climate and environmental risks and social costs, and assure a participatory process, organisations are working to ensure these changes have social justice and the needs of workers and communities at its heart. Weeks before finalising the Regulation of the Just Transition Fund, our expert panel discusses the challenges, complexities, and solutions for businesses and communities in coal regions as we move away from coal dependency, and towards a climate neutral and equitable future.
