As leader of the Department of PRM at Montpellier University Hospital in France she’s involved in rehabilitation of patients after neurological or musculoskeletal diseases.
She obtained her PhD in 2005 focusing on movement analysis of the upper limb of tetraplegic patients. Her current scientific research focuses on impairment, recovery and rehabilitation of the upper arm of stroke patients, with a special interest in brain plasticity and innovative treatments These activities are conducted at the Euromov Laboratory, Montpellier University.
In her daily practice, she’s particularly involved in assessment and treatment of spasticity and related neuro-orthopedic disorders. A few years ago, together with PRM colleagues and surgeons, they created the “Institute of Neuro Orthopedics of Montpellier (INOM)” dedicated to the care of patients with limb deformities in neurological context. More than 1500 treatment procedures are performed in the INOM each year: botulinum toxin or phenol injections, motor nerve blocks, non-pharmacological interventions, mini invasive percutaneous tenotomies, surgical procedures, and others.

Neurologist and Physiatrist, Maria Gabriella Ceravolo is also Full Professor of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy. Member of the Education Committee of ISPRM. Past-President of the UEMS PRM European Board. Coordinator of the Special Interest Scientific Committee of ESPRM on Rehabilitation in Parkinson’s disease. She has published more than 120 papers on the assessment, prognosis and rehabilitation of motor and cognitive impairment in subjects with brain diseases with special focus on neurodegenerative disorders. Her recent studies concern the neural correlates of financial decisions in healthy subjects.
She is now coordinating the rapid living systematic reviews on Rehabilitation needs and COVID-19 in collaboration with the Cochrane Rehabilitation REH-COVER Action.

Interviewer - ISPRM Immediate Past-President
Received his MD from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) School of Medicine and a PhD from Boston University. He was the inaugural Professor and Chair of the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the UPR, Harvard Medical School and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in the USA. He also served between 2006 and 2011 as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the UPR. Currently he is Professor of PM&R and Sports Medicine in the UPR School of Medicine. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of PM&R and Immediate Past-president of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. He is a member of the US National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London. Prof. Frontera has more than 300 scientific publications including 9 edited books and has lectured in 60 countries.

Was Chairperson of the Department of PM&R at the University of Medicine and Denistry of New Jersey for 25 years(1987-2012). He is Professor Emeritus. He was interim Dean of the School for 6 months. He was also the Chief Executive Officer of the Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation in West Orange, New Jersey and later served as its President and was the founding Director of the Kessler Center. He served as Chairpersonm of the American Board of PM&R for 5 years, and as Chair of the American Board of Medical Specialties from 2008-2010. He chaired theEducation Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates from 2005-2007. He is a past President of the Association of Academic physiatrists. He is a member of Ellis Island Metal of Honor, and the National Academy of Medicine. He as the 5th ISPRM President(2008-2010).

Chair of the International Federation of Physical Medicine (IFPMR) and International Rehabilitation Medicine Association (IRMA) International Task Force (1994-1999). This committee negotiated the proposed structure of the ISPRM and successfully obtained approval of the boards of the IFPMR and IRMA to merge forming the ISPRM.

Professor Jianan Li graduated from Nanjing Medical University in 1977 and received a WHO fellowship in Sydney and Melbourne from 1988-1992. Professor Li was involved in a visiting fellowship in Philadelphia, USA in 2000-2001.

Professor Li is the Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine Center, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China. He is a Foreign Associate of National Academy of Medicine, USA and the immediate Past President of International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, as well as Associate Editor of Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. Professor Li is also the President of Chinese Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Chief Editor of Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. Professor Li is an expert in cardiac rehabilitation, motion analysis and motor control, spasticity management and spinal cord injury.



He has published more than 200 research papers, including 14 original papers in international journals. He was chief editor for 19 textbooks and reference books.

Margarida Mota Freitas is a fourth year PRM resident from Portugal. She usually works at Hospital Garcia de Orta, near Lisbon. She is the Portuguese Ambassador of the ISPRM World Youth Forum and the national coordinator of the resident department of the Portuguese Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. As a former dancer herself, her fields of interest are Dance Medicine, MSK Rehabilitation and ultrasound-guided procedures. She is also active in clinical research.
