Ann Gabriel, Moderator

Ann Gabriel is the Senior Vice President for Global Strategic Networks at Elsevier, where she engages with stakeholders in academia, government, and industry to advance scientific publishing and enhance the research enterprise. Her work involves establishing strategic partnerships and developing programs addressing key issues in scholarly communication, such as AI and Open Science. With 30 years of experience, Ann has held leadership roles, including Publishing Director for Computer Science and Engineering journals at Elsevier and positions in electronic product development at ScienceDirect and Cambridge University Press. She holds a master’s degree in communications from the University of Pennsylvania.

Susan A. Martinis
Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Stephen G. Sligar Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Professor of Biochemistry, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Susan Martinis, PhD, is Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she provides leadership for the campus-wide interdisciplinary research institutes, promotes new research initiatives, and oversees the administrative and business processes that ensure the safe, ethical, and productive conduct of research at Illinois.

Dr. Martinis, the Stephen G. Sligar Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, studies the mechanisms, evolution, and biomedical applications of protein synthesis and RNA-protein interactions. She is a successful researcher, engaged in entrepreneurial and corporate partnerships, a committed educator, and an experienced administrator.

Sherine Obare
Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, UNC-Greensboro
Sherine Obare, PhD, is the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement at UNCG, a position she assumed in 2024. A professor of nanoscience, she previously served as dean of the UNCG NC A&T Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering for five years. Recognized as a fellow of the American Chemical Society, she has received numerous accolades, including the 2021 Trailblazer award from Chemical and Engineering News and the 2024 NC Biotechnology Center’s Academic Development Excellence Award.

Under her leadership, UNCG established the Innovative Collaborative Laboratory for Nanotechnologies to Empower the Future Soldier, enhancing research in defense and workforce development. Dr. Obare's research focuses on environmental chemistry and engineering, leading to innovations in contaminant detection, drug delivery, and energy solutions. She has published over 100 articles, secured over $20 million in grant funding, and trained more than 100 students. Dr. Obare earned her doctorate from the University of South Carolina and holds a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University.

Shashank Priya
Vice President Research and Innovation, University of Minnesota
Shashank Priya, PhD, serves as the University of Minnesota’s vice president for research and innovation, overseeing a $1+ billion research enterprise. He manages research development and administration, technology commercialization, and corporate engagement, as well as 12 interdisciplinary academic centers and institutes. He has launched new initiatives around biosensing, biotechnology and biomanufacturing, geospatial science, national security, and data science. Previously, he served as associate vice president for research, and professor of materials science and engineering at Penn State. He has published over 500 academic journal articles and holds 12 patents. He holds degrees from Allahabad University and the Indian Institute of Science, and a PhD in materials engineering from Penn State.
