Join The Washington Center's federal internships staff for a 30-minute info session and Q&A focused on this paid summer 2025 internship opportunity in partnership with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The FTA Diversity in Federal Transit internship program seeks undergraduate, graduate, and law students for a fulfilling, paid 10-week summer internship. A DFT internship is your unique opportunity to work on meaningful projects for FTA, strengthen your professional networks and skills, and have an enduring impact in areas of public mass transit systems. The FTA administers federal funding to support a variety of locally planned, constructed, and operated public transportation systems throughout the United States.
This program is a critical part of FTA efforts to increase diverse representation in its workforce. Students from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. The application is competitive. DFT 2025 will be held in-person at Federal Transit Administration offices in Washington, D.C. and across the country. Your assignment to an FTA office is based on your application materials and interviews with FTA staff.

DFT applicants must be enrolled, degree-seeking students who will have completed their freshman year of college before the internship begins. Applicants who are scheduled to graduate during the spring or summer semesters of this school year are not eligible for consideration for DFT unless their acceptance into graduate school or another upcoming academic program is pending.
A stipend of $6,100-$8,100 for undergraduate interns and $8,100-$10,100 for graduate and law interns will be provided to help alleviate living expenses. The DFT program also covers the cost of shared furnished housing (open to all DFT interns and organized by The Washington Center), and roundtrip travel to and from the internship site city (if eligible). The final stipend amount is based on your decision to accept or decline TWC-organized shared housing.
