Cyber resilience has recently taken on a broader meaning as the nation continues to endure a global pandemic that limits physical engagement. Agile community leaders and managers are using technology in novel ways to improve citizen engagement and drive resource flexibility and efficiency – pandemic-driven or otherwise. Simultaneously, the distinction between the physical and digital with respect to our public infrastructure becomes blurrier each day.

As organizations adopt new digital tools, however, they are increasing the points of attack by malicious actors. Just since 2019, more than 1,500 cybersecurity incidents have been reported to the NJCCIC (NJ Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell). The risk of cyber threats can slow digital transformation and hinder progress towards an innovation-driven economy. Therefore, a safe, secure, and trustworthy digital environment is a prerequisite for future growth and prosperity.

This session will explore the perspectives and needs of municipal, state, and private sector leaders responsible for securing our public and private networks and will highlight opportunities for faculty to form new collaborations with a wide range of stakeholders to advance the frontier of cybersecurity science and technology.

The goal of the series is to deepen relationships between NJ research universities and urban resilience professionals in service of creating collaborative teams to secure federal funding and raise New Jersey’s profile to a national leader in Smart City initiatives.
