The beginning of the year has been marked by announcements of trade tariffs, the continued attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the imminent threat of escalation of hostilities in several regions of the world. What does this mean for trade, and in particular, for world ports? We get the views from the United States of America and the ports being represented there in Washington. We also get a market intelligence perspective on trade lane activity in the container sector and we interview a known IAPH figure who has recently joined an organisation which has tools to support ports evaluate and manage risk.

    Nigel Pusey
    Chief Executive Officer, Container Trades Statistics Limited
    Nigel's career spans the breadth of the global shipping industry, highlighted by key roles such as Chief Commercial Officer at Maersk Line in Copenhagen and CEO of Container Inland Services within the AP Moller–Maersk Group. He further distinguished himself as CEO of The Maersk Company Limited (UK) and Non-Executive Chairman of INTTRA. Nigel's leadership prowess extended to his tenure as Chief Commercial Officer at Inchcape Shipping Services.

    Prior to his time with AP Moller–Maersk, Nigel played pivotal roles at P&O Nedlloyd and P&O Containers, including positions such as Corporate Finance Director and Managing Director of Southern Africa. With his wealth of experience, Nigel is an accomplished maritime authority, driving innovation and excellence throughout his career.

    Allan Gray
    Chief Executive Officer, Sentient Ports
    Captain Allan Gray was President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority (HPA), a role he assumed in November 2019. Captain Gray lead a dedicated team focused on creating economic benefit for the region through the Port’s core lines of business which are cargo, cruise and real estate. He is focused on advancing digital transformation, decarbonization, and safe, efficient port operations while balancing the needs of community, economics, and the environment.

    During his time with HPA, the port has initiated several project and initiatives including the 50-Year Plan and the development of The PIER at the Seaport, Canada’s first living lab for the transportation and supply chain sector. HPA and project partners were recognized with an International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) Sustainability Award in the “Digitalization” category in 2023. The Marine Container Examination Facility, recently completed in Fairview Cove at the Port of Halifax, was recognized for being the first Envision V3 Verified Project in Canada.

    Captain Gray is an experienced leader and trusted partner in the marine sector. Prior to his role at the Halifax Port Authority, Allan served as the General Manager of Fremantle Ports in Australia. He was appointed Harbour Master in September 2008, and was appointed General Manager Port Operations in July 2009 including commercial operations and management of the Port’s bulk business. Prior to coming ashore, Captain Gray’s career at sea spanned over 20 years trading on various vessels from RO-RO, container, bulk, and LPG Tankers.

    Throughout his career, Allan has been recognized for his leadership and in 2013 and was awarded life membership for his contribution to raising the profile of the Company of Master Mariners Australia. He was awarded the president's award for contributions to supplier diversity in Canada.

    Captain Gray also sat on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Aboriginal and Minority Suppliers Council (CAMSC) and as an ex-officio member of the Port Community Liaison Committee in Halifax, a working group which he established to foster collaboration and engagement between the Port and the greater community. He was on the executive committee for the Board of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities.

    Cary Davis
    President & CEO, AAPA
    Cary is President and CEO of AAPA and also serves as General Counsel. He joined the association in 2019 and served as head of Government Relations. He tells the story of seaports and their workers when the President and Congress make decisions on infrastructure, transportation, trade, and security.

    Prior, Cary served in the Federal Government as a Presidential and Congressional appointee for international trade and security.

    He has appeared in the New York Times, the BBC, Politico, and Bloomberg to discuss supply chains and economics. He has written and passed legislation on infrastructure for climate change and international trade. His work has been featured in The Drudge Report, CNN, Newsweek, Breitbart, and Zero Hedge.

    Cary serves on the board of the Propeller Club of Washington, D.C. and was nominated CEO Update Lobbyist of the Year in 2021 for his work to address supply chain disruptions from the pandemic.

    He received his J.D. and Masters from the University of Pennsylvania and his B.S. from Pitt, spending his early years in his beloved home state of Pennsylvania.

    Moderator - Victor Shieh
    Strategy and Communications Director - IAPH
    Victor Shieh is IAPH’s Strategy and Communications Director, having commenced work for IAPH as Communications Partner for its World Ports Sustainability Program which launched in 2018.

    Victor has been involved in the maritime and logistics industry since he graduated in BCom from The University of Birmingham, beginning his career as a management trainee of the National Freight Consortium in the UK before leaving for Spain. There he commercially managed an enterprise serving Iberian ports and logistics operations with real-time radio data solutions.

    He then moved to Belgium in 1998 where he was European Business Unit Manager for voice-based logistics data systems. He then joined Safmarine Container Lines as Global PR and Communications Executive , a Maersk subsidiary with roots in Africa.

    Following ten years in the role, Victor set up his own communications agency, advising shipowners, offshore companies, ports, terminal operators, supply chain logistics companies, and forwarders on all aspects of corporate communications.

    Patrick Verhoeven
    Managing Director IAPH
    Patrick Verhoeven is managing director of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). The organisation represents about 180 ports and some 150 port-related businesses in 85 countries worldwide.

    Prior to joining IAPH in 2017, Patrick spent twenty-four years in Brussels representing the interests of shipowners, port authorities, terminal operators and ship agents at EU level. He started his career in 1991 with the Antwerp-based ship agent Grisar & Velge.

    From 2019 to 2022, Patrick served on the supervisory board of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority as deputy chairman. Patrick holds a PhD in applied economics and a bachelor’s in law from the University of Antwerp. He is associate professor at the university’s Centre for Maritime and Air Transport Management (C-MAT). Patrick lives in Antwerp with his wife and three children.
