Digital Certificates and Encryption are often taken for granted in modern technology environments. However, if not properly managed, availability and vulnerability implementation errors can undermine the protection provided by strong encryption algorithms and present both security and compliance risks. Gartner Research recently acknowledged this issue by adding a new category of cybersecurity tools titled “PKI Posture Management”. This issue is especially relevant given recent changes to NERC CIP that allow for the storage of BCSI in the cloud with the use of appropriately managed encryption.
