Behind the Scenes at BAM (live-stream)

ABOUT THIS WEBINAR
Join President Emerita of BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) Karen Brooks Hopkins, as she discusses her forthcoming memoir BAM...and Then It Hit Me (powerHouse Books, January 2022), chronicling her 36 years at America's oldest performing arts centre. David Lan, writer and producer, joins Karen as moderator of this talk, and they are joined by Lesley Manville. Expect personal, behind-the-scenes stories of artists and icons — including Princess Diana, Ingmar Bergman, David Byrne, LL Cool J, Pina Bausch, Sam Mendes, John Turturro, Rufus Wainwright, Robert Wilson — as well as tales of both the great triumphs and disappointments of her tenure. In her more than three decades at BAM, Hopkins served for 16 years as its president.

During that time, Hopkins oversaw the iconic cultural institution’s dramatic growth including its large staff and its multiple theaters and cinemas, ranging from the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House to the intimate Fishman Space. She has served as chair of the Cultural Institutions Group and on the boards of many local and state organizations. She was named Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Republic of France, was also the recipient of the King Olav medal from Norway and the Commander of the Polar Star from Sweden. During her tenure, President Obama presented the Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists and arts organizations by the U.S. government, to Hopkins at a White House ceremony in 2014. Her widely read book, Successful Fundraising for Arts and Cultural Organizations, is in its second edition.

The recording will be available until 17 June.
