LEADERSHIP MASTERCLASS - ELON MUSK EXAMINED
In this leadership Masterclass, you'll sharpen your understanding of leadership, improve your competence to lead, and indeed, drive high-powered growth. According to Noel Tichy, author of The Cycle of Leadership: How Great Leaders Teach Their Companies to Win, and an accomplished Professor of Leadership Development, an important approach to effective leadership development is the adoption of a Teachable Point of View (TPOV) by the leader. He defines a TPOV as a leader's opinion on what it takes to win in his or her business and to lead other people.
A recent email circulated by Elon Musk to all managers at Tesla (reproduced below) provides an instructive opportunity to examine a core aspect of the TPOV that underlies his approach to leadership, and therefore, what makes his businesses win and how he leads other people:
"If an email is sent from me with explicit directions, there are only three actions allowed by managers:
1. Email me back to explain that what I said was incorrect. Sometimes I'm just plain wrong;
2. Request further clarification if what I said was ambiguous;
3. Execute the directions.
If none of the above are done, that manager will be asked to resign immediately."
Needless to say that the email has generated a lot of controversies. However, it provides a rare opportunity and privilege to broaden our understanding of leadership and sharpen our leadership skills in our continually changing environment with its unique contemporary challenges.

He is the Founder & CEO, EMET LEADERSHIP ACADEMY and Chairman of the Board at Globalview Capital Limited. He also teaches Interpersonal Skills at the Business School Netherlands (BSN) on the Action-Learning MBA Programme, having taught Data & Decisions, Operations Analysis, Operations Research & Corporate Governance for many years at the world-acclaimed Lagos Business School, Lagos, Nigeria.
His remarkable banking career culminated in becoming the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fountain Trust Bank Plc, (now Heritage Bank) which he led for six years with great accomplishments, positioning the bank as an innovation-driven bank with market-leading products and services before taking voluntary retirement from an illustrious banking career, spanning three decades.
Dr. Aina is currently Chairman of Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBEStB), President of both the Africa Fintech Network and the Fintech Association of Nigeria, and member, the UK-Africa Fintech Investment Group. He is also Chairman, Fintech Associates Limited which began operations in 2006, and Vice-Chairman, Accion Microfinance Bank Limited, a leading microfinance bank with international affiliations. He held positions as President of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, President of West Africa Bankers Association (Nigeria Chapter), Chairman, Kedari Capital Ltd, among others in times past.
Dr. Aina’s passion for education is not limited to his professional world. The Segun Aina Foundation (SAF) which he set up in 1995 has supported the brilliant, but financially-challenged with scholarships, mentoring, skill-enhancing training and leadership programmes for over two decades.
